We need a lot more info to help you out:

    What motor do you have?

    Mileage?

Does it do it cold or hot or on startup?

At idle only, or at speed?

Can you be more specific about the location of the tick?

I have the 3.4 v-6 with 113,000 miles on it. Sounds like it coming from the front. And its a faster tick when reved up.

I have the same tick (same engine, 140,000 miles) and it sounds like metal on metal. It's all the time, but easiest to hear idling. I've never changed the timing belt... Maybe that could be it. I checked the spark plugs to make sure the pistons were not hitting them too.

It is a common noise if it is the one I'm thinking about. Mine does it and it is annoying. I've read on here that is has something to do with the emission control aperatus on the 3.4L but I think they all do it for the later 1st gen model years.

Did you check your oil level?

When do these motors need valve clearance adjustments?

Oil level on mine is good, and the engine doesn't burn any oil. I never had to add a drop between oil changes. I have to take it in for it's annual inspection anyway so I'll see what they say and let you guys know what I find out in about two weeks.
