rear seal fail...new axle

Was leaking diff fluid rt rear wheel....mech replaced the seal(outer) I supose, only one labled on parts reciept and the next day started leaking agian. Their solution now is a new axle from toyota w/ all new seals and bearing quoted $800....is this legit or could it possibly need a new bearing and inner seal? Mech never gave this as an option.

Thanks in advance for you time and input!

I would go get a second opinion. Seems like a new axle would be my last resort. If it was cracked or warped I could understand so I would get it checked by someone else.

Isn't there a warranty on the seal work?

On a 2000, I doubt they would honor anything. Rubber breaks down over time, Toyota isn't responsible for it.

No no no...I thought he said he just got the seal replaced and it started to leak again the next day. I figured there would be some sort of warranty on the repair.

yep...I argued that. I asked about the parts and labor warranty and they laughed. The failing seal repair...seal $8, Diff fluid $3, brake cleaner $10, labor $150.
WTF

So they are not going to warranty it? So you can bring your truck in to do some massive $$$$ work and they can screw it up on purpose and you are out of luck?

Oh, I thought you meant the inner axle seal that wasn't replaced yet. I assumed when the mechanic said the outer seal wasn't the problem that it wouldn't be replaced again.

My axle was leaking as well. my mechanic shop replaced the seal, it lasted for 3 days. went back, he said he would personally do the work on the second seal, he put some aircraft sealant on the race and held the seal flange out a little so the seal would ride on a different spot on the axle. lasted about 60 days. he says everything looks ok. he is almost positive its the axle. this shop is one of the best independent shops you can find anywhere. he is a personal friend of many years and is really trying to fix my problem not make money. the second seal and labor was free. he said the only thing left is that the axle is slightly bent.
