    I've got a '96 Tacoma ext cab 4X4
the motor is blown, 2.7L 3RZ-FE
I am not a mechanic but I've always worked on my own cars/trucks
and I've done a transmission swap before but never a motor,,,,

so my question is, How difficult would it be to swap out my bad motor for a rebuilt one? I've got a friend who's a mechanic at pep-bys, he said he would help, I also have an air compressor/impact for us to use, I heard the toughest part of the install is the EGR system...

I actually have a shop, (not the nicest I've ever seen) where I bought the truck, they said they would do the swap for 400.00 which is cheap, but I wanted to do a color change on this truck, so I could paint the fire wall, etc when the motor is out,,,,, I'm a newbie here but have been reading on this site for a while now, any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

No that hard. Just some bolts and all the wiring thats a pain. You just gotta unplug and unwire a bunch. Pull it and drop in the new one, then connect everything. EGR just sucks due to placement stuff
