Body Lift Issues?

Hey everybody I just put on a 3 inch suspension lift in my '00 xtra cab trd tacoma. I'm not planning on doin anything else for awhile since im kinda broke now, but Sometime down the road I would like to consider maybe a 2 or 3" body lift for a little more height, but i've heard bad things about them like ("my gearshifter is too short" or "some of my wiring is pulled apart"). I've also heard bad things about the gas filler assembly. Are these things anything to worry about and is it worth it to work through all of this? I don't really want to pay for a 1,500$ 6 inches of lift and end up going nuts with a sawsall to install it and have a bunch of presswork done to my hubs. Does anyone have some DIU suggestions for alternatives to add onto my first 3 inches, and are there any other potential problems with stuff being to short once it's installed?

 

Just keep it at 3''. Anything over 3'' is overkill, and looks shitty on these trucks...IMO...

Body lifts are the creation of the devil. I have a 3'' BL on my truck (prev owner installed). And trust me, you will hate all the shimmys, vibrations, rattles, creaks, etc...

Plus, body lifts are unsafe, look like shit, and all they do is raise the Center of gravity and make your truck less capable offroad.

There also have been several accounts of the body lift pucks punching through the body mounts, requiring $$$ in fabrication and time to repair the body.

If you must use a BL, keep it 1" or less.

but yeah more trouble than they're worth.

 

Stay away from Body lifts, unsafe and they look like poo-poo.

 

So it kinda sounds like I've found the extent of the "cheap" lift. Probly oughta just get a bigger kit and have it installed professionally or do it myself when the timing is right and if I still want a bigger lift. I've also yet to get the bigger tires for the lift i already have. If i upgrade to 32's that shud also give me a little more height. On the other hand, just because these aren't the tallest trucks around, they still have plenty of clearance so i'm probly good. anything else will just be goin for looks.[/url][/IMG]

 

You can fit 33's w/ a 3'' lift.

 

Hell you can fit 35s if your okay with trimming the fenders. If don't right, it looks sick.

But 33s and 3'' of lift make a VERY capable truck.

 

I didn't want to spend $1500 on a 6" lift either, expecialy for a prerunner, so I went with 3 suspension and 3 body. My body lift kit came with extentions for everything and the everything went well. I bought gap guards and don't have any regrets on my Body lift. My friend has an 01 prerunner and is doing the same since he saw how tall mine is now.
Just some .02 from someone that actually has one.

Nope. And if OP plans to wheel, then I wouldn't recomend it.
Edit: I wheel but not in the Tacoma.

My truck came with a body lift from the previous owner.
Overall, its not horrible, but it definitely isnt a great addition to the truck either. When on rough/unmaintained roads, the front of the bed actually taps the back of the cab on occasion... SUPER ANNOYING!
And then there's the gap under the bed that looks like crap, plus having to make/buy body lift specific bumpers if you dont want the flimsy brackets lifting the stock bumpers for the body lift.
Pros... you can fit larger tires. Thats about it.

My opinion: if you dont go offroad much, dont care about the gaps, and you're cheap.. get one.
If you care about your truck and the way it looks and performs, go another route for the height and tire clearance.

 

Curious how the BL makes the truck less capable offroad?
You can fit larger tires, giving more clearance= slightly better performance
It does raise the center of gravity a tad, but so does a SAS and similar size tires.

 

now you need bigger wheels, it looks like a tonka truck/hot wheels...not hating, cuz im in the same boat. 3 in susp lift and 3 in body lift installed by PO and 31" tires. it looks ridiculous

 

Haha I know what you mean. I have 33s but I'm waiting for new wheels before installing, hopefully that'll be christmas but if not then it'll be whenever I get the money. I have 29s though Hahaha.

 

probably not the best wording...but my comment was refering to the increase in COG with no benefit other than being able to fit larger tires.

 

meh, if you dont live in the salt belt where structural strength is compromised by rust, i see no issues with a quality body lift... IMO it looks like shit but they do fine...

i see lots of guys that wheel alot harder than most on this site have no issues with a body lift

Nope. There is nothing quality about propping your body off the frame using spacers just so you can fit larger tires.

Kinda like saying a spacer lift is quality just because the components are aluminum or poly..
