squeeky clutch pedal

I've seen this posted here and other places, such as toyota nation, (which I must say...I don't go their anymore, for normally...noone responds...nuff said) Ok, I've found that there is a little plastic type bushing that is mounted in a small "U" shaped channel in the pedal bracket, that the spring rides against, that should be replaced, I figure around 70K miles (which is somewhere around the time I heard the squeek) By not changing this bushing, the plastic erodes and the spring rubs (squeek) up against the bracket, hence gouging a channel into the bracket. Eventually, one will have to use their toes to pull up the pedal after releasing, for worn gouge area has let the spring mechanism go over center. (which is now my case)
The fix...remove your clutch pedal, (maybe a 15 minute job) and inspect this bushing where the spring rides. I ordered one before inspection and found the gouge. Don't replace bushing at this point, for there is not enough material in "U" channel to support it. My bracket is currently worn enough to warrant an entire pedal assy. replacement, which I think can be had, if I remember correctly for the $60 range and is most likely aftermarket stuff. Hope this helps. The bushings are cheap and I think you'll still need to order then, if you get a new pedal. I say "bushings" as there are a total of 3. The end of the spring also gets a set and you'll see what I speak of when you look at it.

If U channel area is worn out on your pedal like mine...the pedal sub assy. item number is 31301. I see 2 diff. part #'s so explore that before pulling the trigger

 

I just bought a coil spring from Ace $5 and replaced that other spring. works good as new and no squeak.

Mine just recently started doin that too. I have a '00 taco w only 64k miles and i kinda thought that was a problem you would associate with a an old beater w/ 300k on it. I was about to post about it when i saw this. I'll have to take a look at it sometime. Maybe some grease will do for a temporary fix?

 

i suggest sooner than later. you most likely only need the cheap little bushing. you'll need a bench table vise to hold the spring, if you do get it out. it's really not to difficult. the pedal is mounted with a couple bolts through the firewall. take it easy

 

I'll have to look into it. All i know is it's annoying as hell.

 

Yeah, no kidding. Mine still doing it. Those pics from the above website are accurate with part numbers. Catch it before the damage gets into the metal.

freaking a..... man my clutch is squeeking bad,,,i had no idea it could be a problem like this,,i just got truck a few months ago and just thought a simple greasing would fix it...glad you guys know more than me..

May need some lithium grease, or the $1 bushing, or that part has worn though. It ain't gonna kill ya, but it'll drive you crazy....

 

crap just looked today and sure enough the bushing is gone.... can't really see to good if it's worn really bad, but it's def. gone...i may just try the spring trick,,,my main concern is the soft clutch feel...i'll explore all my options..but for 1.96... its kinda hard not to just replace the bushing you know..

 

how many miles? if around 100K, just order the bushing and when you have it apart, you'll see if the spring has worn a slot. If so, just order the pedal like I said. Don't jury rig your clutch man, just make it like it was when new. You're talking $60 and will most likely last you it's running life (just order a couple bushings when you make your order and don't forget the 2 bushings on either end of the springs ends...you're talking just a couple bucks) Cheers and happy holidays.

 

i have to rant about this but village toyota parts has lost there fucking minds... ok so i WAS going to order the bushing for the clutch until i saw that they wanted 14.95 shipping for a 1.96 part that could fit in an envelope.... i will never use a company who rapes there clients ever....

i know bro, nothing against me...phuckin criminals...somewut like some sellers on ebay. alls they'd have to do is stick in $.05 envelope with a regular stamp and you'd have it.

 

x2 to what m3 said. i swapped out the squeaky crap like 40k miles ago for a linear spring. only problem is now that it's done squeaking for good im hearing other crap haha

 

the stock spring was never the problem. it is/was the bushing. sounds like now you've created more problems for yourself. anyone reading this...just change the bushing, if it ain't too late. good luck.

 

right... but, the use of the linear spring bypasses the need for bushings: that's the whole idea, isn't it?

I had forgotten about this post...and haven't been back here since. Why did you come across it? The slot that is cut out from wear from spring, is the problem. It slightly put the pedal over-center...which make the pedal stick...along with the squeeking. It didn't act up till nearly 175k miles. Why I said to just replace the pedal. With that said, I still have not replaced my pedal. I only put around 5k miles on a year, so I'm not sweating it. Later
