wont crank?

Whenever I try turning my truck on all it does is click once. The past week its been messing up but today has been the worse. Do yall think its the battery or starter??

 

How can I check?

 

if it clicks once its the starter. usually its the connector that corrodes and causes it to go bad.

How old is the battery that's in it? If its close to 5 years old....get another battery.

Sometimes batteries won't give you any warning signs they're about to go bad. One minute everything is good and the next....click click click. I just replaced my original factory battery because it is approaching 5 years old and I don't want the hassle of it leaving me sit somewhere. My husbands battery just died on him a month ago in his SUV - the batteries in those vehicles only last 3 years.

 

No not battery. If its clicking then thats usually a bad starter. Had this happen to me several times.

But a good way to test is just take out the battery and take it to an auto parts store. have them test it, its usually free. If its bad buy a new one, if its good, get a starter.

 

Normally when a starter on a Toyota fails, the solenoid contacts inside the starter wear out and don't make good contact. They will usually start after multiple attempts.

Try a jump start. If no love, check all connections at the battery and starter. Check all the engine grounds. If no problems found, time to pull the starter.

A buddy had this happen. His started after multiple attempts and got progressively worse. He pulled the starter and had it tested. It passed fine (no load during test) . His contacts were worn out. He got the nippondenso part number off the starter and ordered a solenoid rebuild kit off the internet. I want to say it was like 40 bucks. No problems since.

 

It can be the battery. I've had 'clicking' on my 96 (and many other vehicles) changed the battery and everything was fine.

A couple years later (on the 96), same clicking....ended up being the solenoid on the starter. Changed solenoid and you're back in business.

It's a matter of troubleshooting.

 

OP, always check the easiest fix 1st. I have had clicking when my battery is dead so I would start there, like others have said get it checked at a local auto parts place to see if any good, if its good... move on from there.

 

Well I got the battery checked last night and its fine. But I realized it only won't crank when its cold, if the engine is hot it will crank right up
