You just picked up a used 2004 2wd Tacoma Pre Runner sr5. What would you do to this thing right away knowing what you know now about them.
Im planning on getting an alignment, and wheel balance, then I need to take care of the check engine light that came on 3 miles from the dealer. Followed by a lift, suspension and wheels.
Is there anything else I should do to it with 85k miles??

maybe change the fuel filter and clean the throttle body.....and you are very close to needing the timing belt changed.

It is a 3.4L?
I would ask the dealership if they have any maintenance records on the truck. Like....when or if the timing belt & water pump were changed.

Timing belts are recommended to change at 60K miles on the 1st gen trucks along with the water pump. On my 96 tacoma - the water pump leaked at 85K miles. Don't forget about the thermostat too.

I would change all the oils - front diff, rear diff, transfer case, and even the transmission (flush for auto). I would also change spark plugs, have radiator flushed & filled, check the steering pump fluid (does it smell burnt?), check all other fluids, brake fluid, clutch fluid (if applicable), Lubricated driveshaft u-joints & slip joint, Change air filter, change the engine oil/filter, Check brakes/rotors etc. Clean batter cables, check connections on the starter....
bla bla bla Sorry....
