The tape player adapters seem to work well for about two months for me, then they turn to shit and stop working properly. I've gone through three in a year. I should just buy a new deck at this point, lol.

I used the tape played adapter for 2-3 yrs. I had to turn the volume on the device down to 75% otherwise the sound was distorted...sounded fine after, but if you didn't remember to turn the volume on the deck dowm when you switched back to the radio.......SUPRISE!!! It's loud!

I don't know if this would interest anyone. Take a look at pioneer radios found in the scions for a cheap alternative. I used a model 1808 I got off of flea bay for 45.00 shipped and paid another 30.00 for the adapter to work with my I phone. The sound quality is a big improvement over the stock radio. Be warned this model requires extensive trimming of the dash bezel. but other models do not. hope this helps , Ray

I also use the tape. Fwiw every aftermarket head unit I've come across gets terrible radio reception compared to the stock unit. So if you still like the radio . . .

I've heard of it being used, but I've heard hit or miss to sound quality. That and for the $50 plus your time to install it, you won't spend much more to get a decent single-DIN unit. My Kenwood was about $125 and has the 3.5 and full size USB.

Instead of messing with the factory radio, I installed a aux input that plugs into the antenna in in the back of the radio, then you can put the aux port anywhere on the dash. It has this little powered box, with a switch, you just turn it on and it over powers any fm signal. Worked good in my sisters civic.

I'm sticking with the tape player adaptor... I don't care about sound quality, just want to listen to my satellite radio

There is an aux input harness on some factory radios for CD changers and things like that. I did it to my 4Runner and have a 3.5mm jack that does a hardwire line input. Can you take a photo of the back of your radio? I could let you know if you have the same plug.

Or search "Toyota R28 Mod" I found out the info at the T4R forums. Now I have a Scion radio in my 4Runner so I have the stock look but a lot better stereo and more functionality. Cost me $50 for the radio and install was cake. Now I have Aux in, MP3 capability, and a decent Pioneer factory stereo.

I agree. I have aftermarket radios in 2 cars and the FM is OK, but AM is lousy on 1 and does not get ANY on the other. (I know, AM , but sometimes I'll listen to local news, sports or traffic when not listening to XM)

I used the tape adapter for years w/o issue, until the tape deck died. I am convinced it died due to the tape deck "playing" almost any time the truck was running.

Just got a Tacoma again, and I would rather modify the factory deck for an AUX for XM. If I can do it cheap, if not I have a Kenwood I can throw in it.

Just a gen2 cruising through. "A year later post" is great. My sides hurt now.
My .02 from my Honda days, Cassette adapters work great. Never had any loss of sound quality, and they aren't too expensive to replace.

I guess i gotta chime in on this one. I have a stock unit and wanted to put an aux plug on it too. Ive always just plugged my android into a tape adapter, but always had to replace the adapter cuz they would just go to shit in a few months. So i started looking around and found bluetooth tape adapters. So i ordered one at around 20 or so bucks i think. It took a minute to receive it, but not ve used it for several months now with no hitches, minus the option to talk on the phone. It says it does, but ive never been able to get it to work. For what it's worth, sound quality is pretty good. Heres a link

(I know that this thread is ancient, but..)
I've been following this forum on different issues and it's been a great help, so I figure it's only right to return the favor. I saw this thread and found a great auxiliary / bluetooth kit for the 98-04 Tacoma.
From the video it looks like a pretty simple installation.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Just use a cassette adapter, easiest and cheapest way, good sound too. At least that's what I did for the time being until I upgrade my entire sound system from the head unit to all speakers.
