Is it realistic to even think about swapping my auto for a manual transmission? When I bought my truck I was driving a big truck every day--so I didn't really want a manual. Now that I don't drive a big truck every day, I sure would love to have a manual. I'm a pretty good mechanic but would this be totally stupid?

Its very possible. A lot of work and $$$, but very possible indeed.

Ok so yeah...after a good bit more research and checking out the links above, this is sooo not gonna be worth the trouble for a little extra zip and some added fuel mileage! Oh well, it was worth a look anyway!!

Fuel mileage is actually less on the Tacoma. So congratulations  I would look through private seller listings for a used manual Tacoma.

This is my old truck barely converted from prerunner to 5 speed manuall. Its way cheaper and no headach to get a manual from the factory than to convert one. The hardest part of coverting is to kill the cell light. Remember once you replaced the transmission you also replace the ecu then you have to rewiring the transmission to be able to shut off the cell light its no jokes but its possible and tons of researches to get it done:)

    manual swap in progress
install pedals with clutch master, install transmission, clutch line, few wires (reverse to transmission, and clutch switch to start if you care about that), new ecu if you care about emissions or check engine light.
It isn't that bad, I will be doing it here on my double cab when I am swapping the motor. If you want a 1st gen manual doublecab, then you gotta swap it!
