Vibration over 40mph

Have a 1996 4x4 Tacoma, 4 cyclinder, 5 speed manual and currently having a problem. When I go over 40 mph the truck vibrates pretty bad. It is not coming from the engine, cause...when I push the clutch in, it still vibrates. Any thoughts? The frame is not rusting. It passed the recall notice.

 

wheels might not be balanced

 

Check the inside of the wheels. You could have a dried chunk of mud stuck in the wheel acting as a tire weight and throwing it out of balance. That happened to my moms 4 runner and it only vibrated at highway speeds (about 50 plus mph)

 

^^^^^^^ Like he said, clean out the rims good. If that does not work, get them balanced. Try and find a shop where they "roadforce" balance them. I had a similar issue with the wifes CRV, no balance was good enough until I got a roadforce balance, then smooth as silk.

Could be universal joint

 

x2 on the U joint. My boss just had this problem on his 99 xcab 2 weeks ago. 120 bucks for 2 new joints parts and labor. He said the vibration vanished completely.

 

Just got mine roadforce balanced for $40 (all 4 wheels). This should give you an idea of the price range.

 

Again, thanks and appreciated. Will get the tires done first and then go from there. Lucky for me, the wife (ER RN) has a co-worker that does mechanical stuff on the side, so if it is more than the tires, I will not get the shaft from the dealerships.

^^ THIS ^^ I have the same issue and I've done the roadforce balance and had a mechanic go through the front and rear for issues... none found... and still I vibrate from 50 - 67ish...


PLEASE Tell us what it is!!!! if you fixed it...

 

Same thing with mine from 60 to about 68 mph let us know!!

 

I'm bumping this up again because I am having the same issues that are getting progressively worse between 45 and 65 it feels like my truck is going to fall apart!!

 

I am curious as well. I have same issue and here is what I have done so far to no avail:
-Two different sets of wheels and tires both balanced twice
-new steering rack
-complete new OME suspension
-front end aligned

After doing some research between here, TTORA, and ih8mud, i think it has to be the driveline. my next step is to replace the u-joints and the carrier bearing. Can anyone confirm this to be the next logical step?

Any other suggestions/solutions?

I had the same problem with my new TRD back in 1998. Tried 2 different sets of tires before I drove it off the lot. Both vibrated between 40 to 50 mph.

Had dealer rebalance tires. No help. Got them spin-balanced on the truck. No help.

Figured it was related to the combination of the tires and the suspension specs, so I lived with it for 30,000 miles, then bought some Bridgestone Revos. Voila!! Smooth as a baby's ass from 0 to all-out.

Replace Revos at 60,000 miles. No change. Silk-smooth.

Like I said, just a couple comments. Hope you find the problem.

 

Sorry for the delay...it turned out to be the u-joints and had the three replaced on the rear axle. 200,000 miles...pretty good.

 

Mine was bad u-joints also. Replaced and all is well.

 

A long delay in response for the outcome. The problem ended up being the rear drive shaft center bearing went. It failed because my rear leaf springs and shocks were shot. Lets say I went about 180,000 miles on the original shock and springs. Replaced shocks, springs, and drive shaft (got that off of ebay) and all is good.
