How well would an early 90's 6yl engine fit into the 1st gen Tacomas?

Love my Tacoma, but the motor has close to 250,000 miles on it and it is somewhat gutless on hills and where I live is mostly hills.

A friend of mine has an early 90's 4Runner with the 6cyl motor, and the previous owner to him had the bad head gasket and somehow ended up with a brand new engine from Toyota, and it apparently has well under 100,000 Km (in up in Canada) on it now, possibly as low as 60,000 km (less than 40,000 miles).

How well do these motors interchange, it being a previous generation motor.

Also, the 4Runner has been sitting for several years. Would I possibly be dealing with a can of worms?

Would need way too many parts to make it worthwhile.

I'd probably be better off getting my 2.7 rebuilt down the road then.

Ah the 3.0. One of Toyota's many Ford moments.

Yeah a rebuild on that 2.7 or even a used engine wouldn't set you back a ton.

I love my 3.slow! I like it more than my 2.7L. But, the 3.0 is picky and it doesn't take much for it to start running poorly. Like everyone else said... it will be way more trouble to swap motors than it's worth!

Yeah I remember when I was contemplating upgrading from my '89 2wd single cab Toyoya pickup with the 22RE, and I was considering my options with Tacomas, one of my mechanics, a German guy, was so emphatic against going the 6cyl route, to definitely go 4cyl... he must have experienced too many of those 3.0's. Lots of Toyotas where I am.

The 22R is one of his favorite engines LOL! I agree they do have legendary status.

A properly tuned 22RE will just about trump that 3.0 any day, mine was closing in on 300k when i sold it, was still running great !
