How strong is the tailgate on a 2002 Tacoma SR5? I just got the truck. I haul hay rolls for my horses that weigh up to 800#. Is it ok to roll the hay off the back without damaging the tailgate? Thanks

No, your tail gate will not last long, if your going to haul big bales, I would suggest you take the tail gate off.

You may be able to increase the weight limit by laying some plywood on the bed, exending it to the gate but then there's the question of the cable supports.

    Too many to list.

Lay some 2x8's in the bed that extend the length of the tailgate (but not beyond), that should hold quite a bit... Just be careful when rolling them off that you have something in the bed holding them down... Bolt them to the frame close to the cab...

I think I read in the manual that the tail gate has been tested to support at least 200lbs. Like everyone said above, use some plywood and 2 x 4s to distribute the weight evenly or just take the tail gate off. The tailgate can be removed in less than a minute.
