I have been on the search for a Tacoma for a couple months now and haven't really had any luck. There is a guy here locally that has a 96 v6 5 spd with 130k miles on it that he said he would sell me for 3000. It needs both inner fender wells welded to the fire wall because he had to replace the cab because a tree branch fell on it. It also needs fenders, hood, battery, and wheels and tires. It has really good maintenance history with a clean title and the body is really clean on it. I just wanted to get some opinions before I buy it. Thanks

Check frame rust. How much is it going to cost you to fix it with the necessary parts (fenders/hood + buying wheels and tyres)...then compare that to a clean, fully assembles 1st gen. Since there's not a lot of these trucks in scrapyards (they were all crushed), secondhand parts are much harder to come by and new ones are not cheap. Tyres and a battery are obviously not a problem though.

IMO, 3 is a bit much for that even if it is as clean as you say, but be wary and try to talk him closer to 2 grand. Since it is too old to qualify for the buyback recall now, it doesn't matter if it is a salvage title either.

Alternatively, you can just look for another one.

Can you honestly see yourself finding and buying the parts and replacing everything yourself?

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
I would pass to! I have seen too much stuff like that in my life, you will have so much time and money tied up in it you could have bought a brand new truck. Something like that, it just will never end! Look, I spend almost 9 months looking for my gal, checking craigslist and ebay till i found what i wanted and really as soon as it was listed, I bought it.

i would do the same.. dont do it.. my buddy bought an old mustang and tried to re build it.. (he knows a lot about cars and is very good at rebuilding stuff) Even he had so much problems with the car and spent so much money that by the end of it he could have gotten a working better condition mustang for the same price after all the mods and fixes

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I'd go $900. Tops or walk. You're basically looking at a parts truck.
