Air too cod for deckplate mod?

Has anyone ever had a problem with too cold of air in the deckplate mod, say -10 or lower. Its about -10 now so I'm thinking of plugging the hole till it warms up a bit. I don't really know what could happen, but it seems like air that cold wouldn't be good.

Yea i went to start it this morning and noticed it turned over REAL slow and wasn't running right. Sure enough, i checked and i found a snow drift in my airbox and my filter clogged. Its plugged now and will be from now on during fresh snow. I was busting snow drifts yesterday so that probly was a contribution.

 

Haha well there's a big difference between air that is 'too cold' and straight up goddamn snow in there!!

 

Yeeaaahhh, its all closed up now. Its not like there's a shortage of cold air, and its not worth the extra ventilation if I'm sucking snow.. it was bad lol. The filter was pretty much plugged. The guy had just installed a new batt. When i bought it i think so its only got a few k miles on it. Plus i think my block heater is dead too. I need sled parts so this weekend ill probly pick up a new one. I forgot what it was like to be cold enough to frost your eyelashes or throw a cup of water in the air and have ice beads come back down (literally).

Exactly. So because the engine is more easily getting the frozen winter air, more of said frozen winter air is going into the engine causing it to run cooler overall. Which equates to longer warm up and slightly colder operating temp when fully warm.
When it's -10 celsius and you take a short(er) trip you can notice a difference in warm up time between deck plate in or out. Albeit minor.

 

Oh, its a minimal difference. The thing is stock location/stock air path is much more restricted so the air moves slower through everything (intake, tb, manifold. etc). That allows it to warm up a little more before arriving at the combustion chamber. Thats usually bad for performance, but in the winter the air is frozen so performance isnt really affected. (not bringing the cold gas factor into it)

Wouldnt a electric fan pull more air through the rad? Especially at slower speeds? That would also keep the engine cooler and make it take longer to warm up. If anything using a slow inefficient fan,no fan at all, or blocking the rad would make the engine warm up quicker...and possible over heat it. haha

 

Yea, hole is now plugged until there's less snow flying around and another thing, is it worth it to invest in an electric fan? I've heard they help your gas mileage too.
