Honk, Honk, Honk I HATE FACTORY ALARMS

So I was somewhat irritated my new taco came with a factory alarm, it's a 2001 by the way... but I let it go since as long as I remembered to lock it, it wasn't a colossal idiot honking and the twitching tails of nearby ground rodents.

HOWEVER.

I got a progressive snapshot, and put it into my EBD slot, and ever since the alarm has been going batshit crazy, have to walk back and forth about nine times to get it to shut up, and since it's a factory installed alarm there's no convenient extra cable to take off the battery.

edit: I did contact progressive which elevated me to a "special unit" that handles this, since it's a rare happening with snapshot that does occur.

I need help man, I really need the break on my insurance, and the goons at the local toyota dealership want $55 an hour "TO START"(wanted to kill the man when he said start) looking to figure this out, never going there again. You want to tell me in the 23 years that dealer has been there no one wanted a factory alarm disabled, yea right...

I tried digging around tonight for a sensitivity switch or something, found nothing. I want it gone all kinds of bad.

special conditions that might help:
Truck has been out of the other dealership I got it at for about a week, possible to guilt them into removing it?

 

Does the horn honk when you lock the doors?

 

No.

Lights flash when I hit the fob, and thats it.

If I walk away without locking it, it will beep for a few seconds and usually then go off...

 

on the drivers side up under the dash should be a glass break sensor. theres also a unit under there thats for the alarm and keyless entry

 

You know what it looks like at all?

Every guide on the internet is for when you've engaged the alarm but the key fob is dead, and how to get it shut off then. My fob works fine, it's the truck that's going bonkers.

 

theres a way to disable it ive seen it. also the buzzer just beeps and chirps it does not stop the alarm

 

I think there is a plug under the battery for the factory alarm. Search for the what's the plug thread. Id do it but the kindal sucks for linking

Sounds like the alarm ecu may have gone bad.

Also, my 1998 had a shock sensor mounted on the firewall inside the cab. It has a little screw that you can turn up or down the shock sensor alarm.

 

After tearing about for a time and not wanting to break anything, heres what i found.

The box is behind the cover with the two power jacks, the cover is a pain to remove, disabling the battery half left me with no fob, and fuse boxes arent as complicated as i thought.

I was in the end unable to combine suggestions and research into a diy. However the local dealership i got it from after describing the situation and insisting i didnt want the aparm ecu replaced, is going to be using their alarm tech, and toyota specialists to disable the factory alarm for good, and for free. Ill honestly ask them if they can describe the process and or associated costs to share here.

 

Have you considered that it may be the progressive snapshot doing its job? I thought the purpose of it is to track or record your habits which results in your lower premium. If you are not using your alarm, then the progressive gurus might be sitting in the back room saying to each other "Well, HERE'S another reason why we have so many stolen car claims...."

It's a big brother thing, isn't it?

 

I have a solution. I have discovered how to disable the alarm and lock the truck while preserving the alarm system, and leaving the truck locked.

Using the key FOB after exiting the vehicle (I dub this the Killtax Killswitch):

1. Close the door

2. press the fob to lock -red light comes on in cab at this point-

3. press the fob to unlock -red light goes off in the cab here-

4. Open the door

5. Use the power locks to lock

DONE: Close the door, alarm disabled, vehicle locked.

5 Steps, takes about 14 seconds. Works with windows down as well. Discovered by accident. Progressive plug dropped the bill about $35 in the first month too btw. All has been solved.

 

What happens if you just press the power locks when you leave without touching the fob?

 

It will automatically arm

 

Ahhh okay.

Another question. What happens if you are driving and then decide to lock your doors using the door lock?

 

Doors should automatically lock once you get over 15mph.
