Brake Shake

I have an 04 Taco DC 4x4 with 95K and last week I had to bring it in for new tires and a state inspection. During the inspection they found the I needed new front pads, rotors, calipers and shims. I also needed e-brake pivots and bell cranks. In addition to all this I had a 4 wheel alignment done. Yea.. expensive day.

So, on my way home I noticed the truck would shake when I brake and it seemed the faster I was going when I began to brake the worse the shaking would be. The whole truck shakes. I noticed it's REAL bad when I'm on the highway taking an exit, any turning of the steering wheel intensifies the shake.

I called the dealer and took it back in this AM. After a bit they came out and said the rear drums were pretty rusted and it was causing the shaking. I asked them why it was fine before I brought it in last week because they did no rear brake work. They said during the inspection they 'bang' the drums to get them off and this can cause some of the rust break apart. He said he would install after market drums and eat the labor so I said go ahead.

He came back out and said the tech road tested with new drums didn't seem to make much of a difference and that he was going to order OEM drums so now I have to back AGAIN. After leaving I noticed the shaking was still as bad if not worse than when I brought it in.

So, my question .. does this sound fishy? Why would shaking intensify upon turning if it's a rear brake issue?

Between news CATS, O2 sensors and all this I have dumped over 5K into my Taco in past 4 months .. I'm not loving what my Taco is doing for me

 

Sounds like a warped rotor to me. Do you feel your brakes 'jumping' or pulsing against your foot when slowing to a stop?

 

Had same shaking with my 02 tacoma when I bought it. Did some research on here and took my truck into get new OEM rotors put on. Fixed the problem for the most part but at times I can still feel some small vibs when braking.

 

I do feel it in my foot. From what I see here it's the aftermarket rotors they put on the front and has nothing to do with the rear drums? Sound like a safe bet?

 

thats usually warped rotors.....

personally i wouldnt have the dealer do any work on my truck, they are way too expensive.

 

I have the same problem right now on mine. You should just need new rotors Im replacing mine asap.

 

Just go to a brake shop to machine the rotors my local brake charges around 40 bucks for two And now there like new

 

If you want to save a little money and have enough material on the rotors then this is the way to go

 

I actually just noticed my bed hopping up and down when I brake too (whole truck shakes) so I'm starting to think all the after market parts they used are crap (front and rear).

Right now my approach is going to be holding the dealing responsible for ensuring the repair they did is corrected. When that fails (which it may) I'll have the rotors machined. This will be my last trip to the dealer, that's for sure.

Warped rotors for sure. I have the same problem and will be replacing my rotors and pads soon.

 

Hummm.. Maybe Toyo tech was right. Used my ebrake for 3 stops on way home and truck shook like when I apply brakes.

 

Not that this has any bearing on your brake and shake issue, but you said the dealer did a 4 wheel alignment? That's interesting, because the rear can't be adjusted.

I would never go back to this place.

 

Ha! Good point.. That was my wrench talk (exactly why I'm not a mechanic). They did an 'alignment' .

 

Check for the rear axle seal leaking oil, it doesn't have to be much but will cause the rear brakes to grab.

 

Well, turns out the tech was correct. For some reason the after market drums were the issue, a new set of OEM drums solved the issue and there is not of hint of shaking now. Never thought crappy / rusty drums could make the whole truck shake that bad.
