camper shell dilema

Hi All:

Ive been wanting a shell forever but they are so pricey... I finally found a reasonable one (but its a drive) thats the same color as my truck. BUT, its a stockland, which is out of biz.

This shell is about $500, whereas a new one is about $12-1300.

Is it worth it to buy a out-of-business brand?

Depends on what kind of shape it is in.
They tend to hold up very well (not sure about that brand) but overall fiberglass holds up well.
Just about anything else can be repaired.

I think most brands of canopy shells have the same size windows (if they are the standard windoors or sliders). Leers makes some shells with the big windows that just crank out on the bottom, but other than that they should be standard.

glass can be repaired by almost any automotive glass place.

So no worries even though the company that made the shell is in no in business.

Ya, truck got broken into in '98 and a local shop was able to replace the side window with something out of his boneyard. It was an Innovation cap and he didn't carry Innovation.

The ones to stay away from if "orphaned" are the newer SUV-looking style windows and doors that are getting popular on the Leer, Snug, and ARE caps. Those are proprietary, and while a good glass shop might be able to replace them, it would probably be more economical to replace the cap.
