Why do I have push button 4x4? and some do not.. same years.

As the title says, when I used to work for Toyota in 01 I remember Tacomas and 4runners having a push button 4wd on the shifter like mine.. but it seems that most 01-04 4x4 tacoma do not have it....


Anyone out there know why mine does?

Truck specs are:

2002 Extra cab TRD V6 5 speed factory moon-roof all black color key package.

I am not really sure but All 2000 or maybe 2001 plus models i've seen are push button. I know the J shift (non push button) ones are usually (or always as I have seen) manual hubs. Which are more of a base model thing. Since you have a TRD it is probably part of the package to have the upgraded(bs) ADD diff.

Well I like it, My old 89 had the j shifter so.. I think this is better for quick shifts when weather gets stoopid at low speeds.

 

idk I like the j shift, one quick pull back and im in 4hi on the fly. And no electronics to go wrong.

 

I use it in the snow and heavy rains at low speeds from a take off.

I am not a fan of sitting there spinning tires getting sideways when trying to go forward.

 

You also have an auto.. a 5 speed gets a little more loose pretty easy.

 

Yeah no problems spinning here unless the road is a sheet of ice.

Sheet, i cant keep mine from spinning when its wet and easing into the gas as easy as possible...

 

My 03 taco Is a 4 door and came with a auto and the J shifter My buddy has a 87 4 runner and it has and electric with an auto and a electit T case.. So toyota likes to put the electric T case in 4 runners and behind autos but in some rare cases tries to make a taco seem more desireable with a Electrick T case.. Just pull the creature comfort out and put in a J shift T case.. Nough said.

 

Not an excuse by any means.. but I have a 38lbs flywheel and a stage 2 racing clutch,, it has little play for a slow start.. it is very harsh to drive.. I actually do not like it.

 

thats because you don't have enough led in your ass. 4 runners and 4 Door tacos dont have that issue unless i want it to that is.. lol. some nonsence about a 4.0 ford please what site are you on.

 

huh .. I have barely ever broken loose in the snow up here. I've learned to drive without the gas on starts on dicey roads. When in first, I just release the clutch without the gas to keep the wheels from spinning out, once rolling..gently give 'er the gas...no problems
Hardly ever use 4x4 on the paved roads.
Dirt roads oh hell ya.

 

dang, all those 4.0L single cab rangers I test drove must have been seriously down on power then because they were absolute DOGS.

 

Yeah and I managed to find 2 for sale when I was looking for a truck, both 5 speeds and 4x4. But man idk what was up but they both made my bronco feel like a ferrari lol.

 

same here, ended up with a sonoma for the time being till I could afford the tacoma.
