Floppy and loose shifter!

The shifter on my 96 auto 4x4 is really loose and does not lock in Place very well and I was wondering if I can pull that center console and replace a bushing or something to get it firm and to lock in place well. Just kind of wobbles around and it's starting to bug me. Any help would be great!

 

Can they be replaced easily?

 

Well I will tell you that it is moving more than normal

I had the same problem on my taco what I did was grease the driveshaft and tightened all the bolts on the tranny underneath and as well as in the cab. I took out the center console and the cover from the automatic shifter and tightened all the bolts, made a huge difference in the sloppiness.

let me tell you since up here we have had a "global warming spring" (and I love it) I have been under and in my truck scrubbing by hand and changing all the fluids, (the rear diff. looked like someone peed in a jar with a black crayon) the bolt looked ok, but shit, it is so easy to do this stuff on a 4x4 I just cannot believe people let stuff like this go. I have YET had to jack this truck up to do anything like this. I ran it up on a set of suv rhino ramps just to get all out of the diff. but it makes one hell of a difference.

I'm pretty sure it's completely normal. There have been many threads regarding this issue. My auto shifter is the same way. It bounces around all over the place. One time it shifted into neutral But that was on terrible dirt road and I was going 50mph instead of 5...

 

If there's a lot of side to side movement it's most likely a bad bushing. There's two blue bushings that are used in Toyota automatic shifter's, they like to disintegrate over time. Most dealers stock them and if I remember right they were only a few bucks.

You do have to remove the whole shifter to get to them, at least I did in my 4runner. I also had trouble disconnecting the wiring to the over-drive button. It was easier just to cut the wire's and solder them back together when I re-installed the shifter. The dealer even gave me a diagram, made the job easy, but a little time consuming.

I don't want to drag is on, and waste your time, but since we both have 1996's I would check on the bushing. Now while I have never had a auto, I have driven plenty of them, and lots of miles, but it shouldn't be loose. before they passed away, my grandparents had a 96 camry, v6 and I remember the the shifter was very solid. And that car would fly.

Well I tore into my truck yesterday and all the play was I the linkages before anything got close to be transmission. I added a spacer for my side to side play and there is now no play side to side but looks like a bushing in another linkage needs replaced prety bad so it still goes front and back a good bit. It is much better now and I never had to take the shifter and boot off the trans. Just had the pull the cover and add some homemade bushings

 

I just received the 4 OEM blue bushings from Toyota for my 95 4x4 Auto V6. There are 4 total needed correct? Don't know if I have the know how to get it done. I removed the shifter console and I see the 2 bushings (they are totally broken) that are on both sides (left/right) of the T handle, but I do not see where the other 2 blue bushings go

 

Don’t know if your having the same issue I had, mine is an automatic and I could shake my shifter side to side, and it could easily be pushed out of gear.

This was my issue. Bought new bushings off eBay for $14.00 and it took about 15 minutes to install. Did not have to completely remove shifter. Shifter now feels like new and is nice and tight and can’t be move out of gear unless the shifter button is pressed.

I have a 99 and it only had two bushings. Don’t know if yours is different.
