This definitely won't solve the problem, but might help you get to a safer spot.

Unplug your battery, wait a while, plug it back in.

Im no expert but oil light usually means oil pressure is gone. Do you have oil on the dipstick?

Edit: I failed to read the title and thought you meant engine oil light sorry. Not a clue on trans temp light sorry

Yes i oil on the stick. it shows its at a good level. i let it cool down for about 30 minutes and tried to start it up. it started and i went all the way home and no light came on. Any thoughts on why that may have happened?

that's a little unnerving. Is your trans oil still nice and red? maybe time for a series of drain and fills. Or it could be an electrical thing. I'd consider going to the dealership for something like this. Something in the trans may be clogged, inhibiting the circulation, and hence the cooling, of the transmission oil.

Someone also told me in the toyota manual it says that if that light ever comes on you should pull over and rev motor to 1500rpms every so often and then it should go off. I didnt try this because when i tried to start after 30 minutes the light did not come on and i drove 15 minutes home with no issues. When i was riding down the road i was makin a U turn and picked up speed pretty quick. the rpms went to 5k when i did that and when i let off the gas at the speed limit the light came on and shut off. Maybe me doin that had something to do with it?

Auto trans is cooled by the radiator. If your coolant is hot and the trans is under heavy load (especially if it's slipping), it can overheat the fluid.
That's why the manual says to pull over and rev the engine.
Pulling over and putting it in neutral disengages the clutches and hydraulics so the heat source is removed. Revving the engine speeds the front pump and cycles the fluid through the radiator, and the engine fan draws air through.

Might want to have the radiator checked/flushed (including the trans cooling lines) and change the trans fluid for good measure.

Thank for your help! I also just popped the hood an noticed that my coolant in the resivior tank is above the full line. Could this also be why this could have happened?

Overfilled is not bad... but my concern would be "where did it come from"?

The level in the reservoir rises and drops with the temperature of the engine. When hot, excess coolant will vent into the can, and when cool, the coolant contracts and draws from the can to maintain the radiator at the top of the cap.

If your coolant level has suddenly started running higher, something has been "added" to the cooling system. If the trans cooler has failed, it can allow for an exchange of coolant/ATF, which will contaminate the coolant AND the trans.
Same way a head gasket or cracked head/block can cause oil and coolant to cross-contaminate.

Well I noticed that it was at that level when I bought the truck 3 months ago. And its ran fine since. Once my trucked started it ran perfectly fine like it had before the light came on

Just talked to Toyota. I told them exactly what happened and they said that when I went around that U turn I shifted my transmission fluid enough to where the sensor showed I had low fluid and then shuts off the truck

that's weird. Very misleading to have the "A/T TEMP" light come on when it thinks the fluid is low. A fluid being low and a fluid being too hot is a big difference.

Anyhow, I'm guessing your trans oil must be on the edge of being low? I whip around u-turns and have never had that happen.

+1

You should not uncover a "low fluid" sensor unless you're on your side.
Your suspension and tires are not capable of running the skidpad at 1g, and it takes 1g to push the fluids over at 45 degrees.

Fully warm the trans (nice, 10 mile drive), stop on a level surface, shift through all positions, pausing for a few seconds each time, place in park, and check the fluid level with the engine still running.

Well he said that it's a safety thing and that's why the light came on. My truck had been on maybe 5 minutes when that light came on. So I don't know. But I also took a 30 minute drive an drove normal and it didn come on and nothing sounded different

I'd still check your fluid levels.
It should not have been uncovered and come on from a hard corner.

I'm not even sure the 1st gen has a low ATF sensor.
