Word from the body shop? Need some advice

So I dropped my truck off to get painted and got a great quote and everything checked out and I spoke with the guy today and seems they ran into some issues. I had some pretty serious chipping and flaking in my paint and what the body shop said was when they we stripping/sanding the paint they said that they ran into lots of body filler and they said that the chipping actually looked like it was caused by the previous paint just bubbling off. They went ahead and stripped and sanded the paint down and then just resprayed with a heavy primer and then painted and cleared and everything but he said that the bubbles are still shadowing through the paint. He said that they could go ahead and completely go to metal and remove all the old body filler and anything that is there and redo the primer, sealer and paint but that would be an extra 600 or so for the entire truck or they could go ahead and sand this new paint down and just re prime and paint over it in hopes of removing those shadows which he wouldn't charge me for. Or he said that once i get pictures in the morning and if I don't think its too bad they could leave it and he would give me a 100-200 back that they had originally quoted me for stripping the paint for the whole truck. What do you guys think? I just want some rust protection and don't have much $$ to drop on it so I took it to a cheap place but they have been reasonable thus far in working with me. Just looking for some input and no comments about "should have gone to a better place or paid 2-4k for a good paint job because the reality is, I bought the truck for 4k so I have no interest in throwing away money on that expensive of a job" I gratefully appreciate any advice as I will be talking to him tomorrow to give him my thoughts once I see pictures. I am out of town for 2 more weeks so its not like I can just bop over there to look at it either.

Sounds like you've found a good shop that isn't going to rape you.
He's willing to give you a break if you can live with it the way it is now? That's unheard of! Most places around here wouldn't say shit, then when you notice and bring it back, they'd say it must have been some wax product that you used that got under the old paint.

I'd definitely kick him the extra $600 to do it right. For $600 around here, you won't get much better than a 1-Day POS.

 

well that would be $600 on top of the $725 that was already paid so I don't know if I could pony up the extra. Just not in the budget. I am pleased with him wanting to help me out but sucks to here that there was a bunch of filler underneath there ya know. He said he is pretty picky (As he should be) and I may not think anything of the shadows but he would send the pictures and we could go from there

 

Check the pictures first. Maybe go the middle route - have them sand and paint again at no extra charge.

 

Ya... sand and paint is your only option if you don't have the budget.
But still... $725+$600 for a complete repaint, quality job, is a good price.

Hold onto that guy's card... he's a good shop.

 

Yea, we run into that a lot. You can't always see whats under the paint until you sand it down. It's hard to quarantee any work, unless you take it down to metal and do the body repairs yourself and then paint it.
My truck was just stipped and painted 3 weeks ago. They had to go to the original color coating and metal in areas, lay on a heavy coat of primer to block sand it, then seal it and paint it. Looks awesome, but not cheap.
Pay the extra money and you'll be happier.

 

Why didn't the guy and I may of missed something here but, anyway why didn't he tell you there would be extra charges if when striping the paint and bondo was found there would be extra charges, as far as where it is bubbling off, and as many cars that Maco paints I would think that they would have a Bondo detector tool, to cover there ass when they estimate a job.

One last thing if the bondo is bubbling there is a good chance that its from moisture under neath it, hopefully its only due to the topcoat of paint breaking down from the elements, I did this type of work for years and bondo under paint is easy to detect if you know what you are looking for.

Well, I never got pictures from him this morning so looks like he will be receiving a call on Monday and I may have to be a little more forceful in having this fixed. I will post pictures when I get them. Thanks for your help guys

 

Well its taken longer than I had excepted but I got it worked out with the body shop and after a very lengthy discussion with my clarifications of the work that has been done and the options, he told me that really the best thing would be to go ahead and re-sand, and then they would shoot it again so and that after that, they would warranty the full 4 years that I had originally signed for and he was extremely confident that non of the shadows or anything would show through after this next sand and paint. It will cost me $200 to do the full re sand and paint because they are going to re-coat the whole truck so after the whole thing is done, I will have paid $925 for the full sanding and stripping, prime and sealers then the paint itself so I was ok with that, especially with the 4 year warranty that I would get for the paint. I will keep you guys posted on what it looks like when its done but I was not real happy with them because they has originally not even taken out my tool box to do the first paint and so it will be done right this time as well.
