Time to replace Igniters?

My`98 TRD Taco just turned over 179K miles - still runs great - but I haven't replaced the OEM Denso plugs since 139K miles, or the plug wires. I'm not certain how long I should let the Denso plugs go, and if I should go ahead and replace the plug wires and igniters, for preventative maintenance purposes.

Can anyone enlighten me on when to change plugs, wires and igniters - I'm an old USAF electronic tech and pretty anal about keeping everything working at peak performance.

Your assistance would be most appreciated...thanks

On my old 98, I changed the sparkplugs every 25,000 miles and the wires/coil packs every 50,000 miles. When did you replace the timing belt last? I changed mine at each 100,000 miles.

Wow, I guess I am overdue on spark plugs - but wasn't certain if the Denso plugs could go 50 - 60K like newer high-dollar plugs. Still not sure about the plug wires and igniters (coil packs?). No recommendation in the OEM manual. Anyone know how much those igniter (coil packs) cost?? Timing belt is good to go - change every 80 -90K miles, last time was 149K miles.

I will not say that you have to replace the coil packs that often, but I never had a problem with starting or running in 250,000 miles. Perhaps it is a habit leftover from the old days of points, plugs, rotor, cap and wires every 12,000 miles and plugs every 6,000 miles. The last coil pack/wire set I bought was around $70.

Thanks, guys. I am still "old school" when thinking about ignition parts maintenance - I owned a '90 Toy pickup (old 22R 4-banger) for 11 years before finding my '98 Taco, and it was routine back then to change out all ignition stuff every 20K miles or so. I've only had my Taco for 4 years, and never really knew much about the ignition system besides replacing plugs and wires back at 139K miles.

I did have the water pump replaced when I had the timing belt replaced (thanks for the heads-up) at 149K miles - I was at least that smart

Anyway, I will replace the plugs, wires, and coil packs this go-around (I found coil packs are around $76 to $80 each), and be more careful from now on.
