I had a 99 tacoma extd cab 4cyl. 5 speed 4x4 SR5that toyota bought back 4 years ago. Every since I have wanted to get another one and have found an 02 extd cab 4cyl. 5 speed 4x4 SR5. It has 151000 on it, body is in very good shape, runs and handles great. My concern is that in October of 2010 the had the frame inspected and it was ok so they coated it which still looks ok except at the very back where there is a lot of rust on it and the gas tank skid plate also has a lot of rust. It sounds to me that since it was inspected and coated that it will be covered for 15 years from date of manufacture. Is this correct? They want $8000 for the truck and I want to buy it but I don't want to end up with a worthless truck if the frame rots away.
    What is everyone's opinion?

IMO if they coated the frame, and now its showing rust, they were probably trying to hide something in the first place.

Spend a few bucks for a proper inspection prior to buying it, you can also have the engine comprsion test done at the same time. I the owner wont allow it, he'she is trying to hide something.

Did a Toyota dealer do the inspection and coating? You should verify that from the VIN at a Toyota dealer first.

If Toyota did it, then you would be covered for 15 yrs from the date of first service, in the event that the frame needs replacing. Toyota should also confirm that, when you do the VIN check.

Otherwise... do an 'About Face' and keep on searching.

    Thanks for the information.

I'm going to call the dealer that the inspection was done at and ask for a copy of the service info. If it checks out and it will have the 15 year frame warranty I will by it.
