transmission leak

what the hell,, i just changed out the fluid in transmission ..did not over fill, now it looks like my transmission is leaking around the shifter area,,,hard to tell but it appears its comming from the top somewhere...leaking and blowing down towards the rearend,,rather annoying.. try to do a good thing and this happens,,any ideas what it may be??

 

Could some of the fluid overflowed when you were adding it and rundown the outside of the input tube? Check the input tube and make sure it is not loose to where fluid may leak out. Does your dipstick show the fluid is at normal level?

 

it hasnt leaked around input tube,,,its def comming from the top around the shifter area,,,i can see its very oily up there apparently it has been leaking for sometime,,

 

guess i'm going to have tto pull the inside shifter area off and see if its a gasket or something leaking.. anyone know where i can find a blueprint of this transmission?? 3.4 liter 5 speed?

 

took shifter cover off,,and you can def tell its leaking from the cover area,,,will work on it tomarrow..i'm running out of daylight..

 

Go here and scrowl down to your transmission.

 

Check the vents on your tranny, since proper fill is only about 50% full there is no way oil should be leaking from the top. If the vent is plugged it will look for a way to relieve the pressure though.

 

didnt get a chance to work on it, but will soon,,,cleaning it up seems to be the 1st task at hand so i can see where its clearly leaking from... i'm going to drive it when its cleaned up to see if i can catch where the oil is comming from. (with the inside cover off,,so i can clearly look and see.)

 

No dipsticks on manuals...

OP - Did you fill using the fill plug or from inside the truck through the gear box? Like previously stated, its really only a 50% fill so its hard to believe oil leaks up that high.

 

cleaned the top really good with purple power and a tooth brush,,,its def NOT leaking from the top,,,it looks as if someone has been into this tranny already judging by the reddish orange looking sealer they used,,but back to the point,,it looks like its leaking between the transmission and some sorta spacer plate between the transfer.

 

i have the same problem! i replaced the seals and everything for my gear shifter and my 4wd shifter and its still leaking out of the 4wd shifter but idk why:/

 

i'm taking it to the car wash and blowing it down really good under the tranny this weekend,,and searching till i find this fu*%N leak,,,i can't stand it...makes no sense ,, drain and refill, now leaking like a freaking sift. if i have to drop tranny i will,, but god i just put my suspension lift on last weekend,,i want to ride around,, not crawl up under this dang thing again,,

 

New seals on an old, worn shaft wil normally not seal. The groove worn into the old shaft by the old seal prevents proper contact. A plugged breather will also cause a leak, as previously stated.

 

well u can clearly see the wett look for the pics,,,i called a transmission guy here, (been doing it fior 25 years ) and he said it could absolutley leak from the top..to just try that 1st, and if thats not it,, no charge to just look and find the leak,,,you can't beat that,, so im going that route after i spray it clean...when it stopps raining, i'll update with what i did and find.

 

I've run into the same thing on mine and knock on wood it is cured as not had a leak from them in a while now.

First off the orange/red sealer stuff you see is the factory type fipg they use instead of using some paper gasket or the like. Does not mean the gearbox has not been into, but does mean that they at least used the factory gasket maker to put it together again.

You could very well have a leak from the top shift plate. You have at least one vent there (round sort of nub sticking up off the plate). I pulled the shift plate off of mine, cleaned it up really well, sprayed brake clean through the vent area and got all the gunk off all over so it could breath free. I also made a gasket to fit under the plate using a roll of card gasket I had laying around. Coated the gasket with a thin layer of sealer all around and put it back together. Lastly I changed the small hose that runs from the transfer to the gearbox on the side there by the shifters.

I also had two other leaks. One leaking from the plate between the gearbox and the extension housing and the other dripping off the bottom of the transfer case where the skid plate is. Transfer was definitly not leaking from around where the shafts go in. Those leaks ended up being the output seal on the gearbox and the input seal on the transfer case. Mine is a 1995 also so you should have the same part number seal for both of them. I'd have to go look to find the number for you if you need it. Replacement not too bad to do. Just a bugger to fiddle about with the odd shaped, heavy transfer case and align even with a trans jack to do the job.

It was the top shifter plate leaking,,,Got some cans of brake/parts cleaner and cleaned that baby up,,plus i used (below pics) this stuff i stole(borrowed) from my old job and it worked perfectly, i used it on the bottom and top of the oil splash shield and around the bolt holes... clean and oil free...

hope its fixed,,i will swear by this stuff i used,,we use it at work on oil pumps that flow 500 degree oil to a roller,,so i know it seals and will not leak..

$22 for the dealer's rtv, yikes, sore sitting down right 'bout now.

Yeah, black RTV would of prevented the resurrection of Christ... Wouldn't worry about it leaking EVER again. Cheers.

 

Best way to find out is to clean it real good and then watch it. Could be the gasket under the shifter plate???
