Rear diff, how much fluid?

I bought 3qts of lucas oil for my rear diff. The first quart went in fine, but half way through adding the second, it started pouring out the fill hole as fast as it was going in. I assume its full, but before I call it good should I let the excess lube spill out the fill hole before capping it off or is it good how it is. In short, if I take off the filler screw, lube will flow out.

Are you replacing or just adding? Also are you on a level surface? Normally you fill until it comes out.

Pretty level, and I'm replacing. I just drained it, and then filled it. There was also a bubbling sound when I first loosened the drain plug. Came out grey and somewhat thick

Oh yeah, I know its been long over due. I cleaned the magnet and will probably drain and refill in another 3k. I was able to get about 2qts in, but in was coming out the fill hole pretty good. Think its good to call it done or should I raise the back end and get the other quart in there?

No don't raise it to add more. You could damage the side axle seals that way.

Check to see if the breather isn't blocked.

He said it bubbled. The breather could be blocked or partially blocked which would cause a pressure buildup.

So how would I check it? I saw a mental cap on top of the diff, it pops up and down when I pressure it with my finger

You could blow through it.

I just changed out my fluid a few days ago, the manual calls for 2.8 quarts on the 4x4. I'm curious why yours didn't take more than that, something doesn't seem right. Mine took almost dead on the 2.8 to get fluid to come back out the refill cap. I would pop off the refill plug and try to top it off. I personally wouldn't run it without the proper amount of fluid in there..

If I try to add more, it pours out as fast as I can pour it in.

My bad, didn't take the time to check which rear end you had, should be be good to go if it's at the top...
