Engine shut off - What happened?

I was driving my truck home from work at about 30mph with the radio on.

Radio flickered off for a second.
About 10 seconds later the radio flickered off again (only for a second).
About 10 seconds later the engine shut off.

I stopped the truck, and started it up again without any problems.

The truck wasn't hesitating or running poorly, and I have no idea what happened.
I went to auto zone to scan it on my way home - no codes.

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this?

1996 Tacoma
Replaced with new alternator 2 years ago.
Replaced with junkyard distributor 2 years ago.
No other known problems, no check engine lights, no stored codes.

 

I would go under the hood and check your battery terminals to see if they are tight and if they are corroded, they need to be cleaned. If they are good, make sure your battery is tightly held in the battery box. If they are both good, then check your negative cable and make sure it is not loose and need tightening. How old is your battery ? Good Luck.

 

The battery is pretty old. I'll check the terminals, grounds and cables.

 

Even though you replaced your alternator 2 year ago, there's a good chance that could still be it. I'd go up to a local part store and have it tested. Most modern day cars run off of the alternator's alternating current, not the battery. If it's not wanting to stay running but still cranks with no problem then I'm willing to bet that's what's wrong. I had the same problem with one of my old Taco's. The bad thing about alternator's is that they don't give signs of dying :/

 

Well, yesterday after work it wouldn't start at all. Completely dead battery. I replaced the battery. The + terminal was really nasty looking so I replaced it. I also sanded down the negative grounds and put dielectric grease on them.
The truck seems to be working fine now!
I'll take it to auto-zone and have them test the alternator just to be sure.
