Check Engine Light , Jump or Paperclip? No Reader..

Can I use a Paperclip or something along those lines to read a CEL? I don't have a reader and won't be able to get up to the parts store for another couple days. Remember in the past on other vehicles I could just jump it and count the flashes. Been searching but no luck..

Not on an OBD-II
That trick only worked with the original OBD-I connector and you would read a 2-digit code from the CEL.
OBD-II is a 4-digit code and there's a LOT more of them.

 

Yeah I went to O'reilly's which I believe used to be Schucks up here and they let you take a scan tool out for free as long as you leave your ID. I had to clear some codes created from installing a CAI

Thanks fella's. Oddly enough someone was holding a garage sale outside my place of business and had an ob2 scanner for sale. Talked them into letting me use it for 5mins.

Pulled code p0402. Guessing I'll need to be looking into my EGR.
