HID conversion with stock headlamps?

Has anyone did an HID xenon conversion using their stock headlight assemblies? I have a 03 Tacoma. I did this on another car I have that came with halogens, but had the projector lens from the factory and it worked great. I don't know how the factory diffusers in the Tacomas light work with xenon. I've seem them that have a bright blob of light. I was looking at different types of halogen bulbs and for the higher end ones you can get the HID conversion kits. Just wondering.

yea if you want the best light performance, get projectors. but if your a poor college kid (like me) and just want a lot of light without spending too much money, then just get an HID kit. "DDM tuning" has kits for $30 or $40 and they come with a lifetime warranty. a lot of people hate on DDM for some reason but i know a lot of people that run them and say they have never had any problems and some have been running them for years. you might have to angle your headlights down a bit if you just run HID's in the stock housing

 

A lot of people on here say dont run them they throw light all over the place. IMHO they aren't that bad ad projectors look terrible in a 1 gen. I have an 04 and they aren't bad at all.

 

I have a kit from DDM tuning in another car and have been very satisfied with them. I emailed the vendor that was mentioned above that offered the group buy to see what was involved in the conversion and what the cost is. I'd like to see a photo of the conversion and hear some feedback on how it performs.

I have a cheap hid kit glares if u don't put the bulb right...and need to aim them right...but I like the look..pics in pro file

 

yea i agree. they kinda throw light in a high beam pattern, but i like it that way. and yes some people think i have my brights on and flash their brights sometimes, but they get over it when they pass me

EDIT: and as long as you get the 35w and angle them down a bit, they should be fine

 

That's pretty selfish and pretty illegal

I've also installed SlimCubby HID bulbs and ballasts in a friends truck, very bright, but not able to be aimed as to not harm the eyes of others.

 

DO NOT just buy those ebay kits or a cheap HID retrofit kit. As mentioned above and by the previous poster installing HID kits in non HID lenses throws light in all directions and does not concentrate the pattern blinding oncoming traffic and actually DECREASES your visability.

When you look straight onto an HID it LOOKS brighter because it throws out more light, but the lights is thrown in all directions not a concentrated beam.

In addition it is Illegal to run HID's in non HID approved lenses. Save the cash and hassle and get a projector retrofit.

yea thats why i tinted the headlights. but there starting to fade a lot so i need to redo them

is it illegal in all states? because in New Mexico, there are tons of people running stock headlights with HID's

 

Can't beat the price or performance from TRS, or friendly and helpful customer service for that matter.

 

I'm not going to install without the correct projector lens. I did a search and looked thru the DIY and didn't seen anything about this retrofit. Anyone have a link that shows what's needed?

Yea I'm pretty sure it is illegal everywhere but it isn't enforced by the cops. Around here, if you have HIDs in the stock housing, they will reject the vehicle for inspection. I'm still waiting to see if they reject the retrofits because they are really strict in my particular area.
