where do I point the infrared thermometer and what kind of temperatures should I expect from these points?

I was told that the temperature should be significantly higher after the first catalyc converter any suggestions? or pointers? currently I have a check engine light on with exhaust issues i am trying to determine if it if it's a sensor or the actual catalyc converter. the code is p0420
