Transmission shifting hard

    Okay I have a 2001 3.4 v6 automatic. When drivin it seems to shift fine. But when I'm comin to a stop it's shifts hard back into first right when I'm about to stop. I plan on draining all the transmission fluid, all of it. I'm gonna change the filter in there too. I assume there is one. I don't have an owners manual so what type of fluid should I use. I called Toyota and they said just straight ATF. But my buddies who works at a auto parts store told me in his book it says dextron 3 or mercon 5. Which is it? And maybe some Lucas stop slip as well. Do y'all think this may solve my problem. And have any of you had this issue and what did you do to fix it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

    Yes, just use Dexron III. If you can't find it, use a higher number Dexron like IV or V. It's backwards compatible.

    You should only need about 3 quarts since it's just a drain and fill.

    Fluid can cause hard downshifts or ECM may need to be flashed to restore parameters. Try these if it happens again.

    Well what if I want to take it all out? I wanna make sure it's got all the same transmission fluid. And I know the previous owner changed it but I have no Idea what he put in

    Then it will need a flush, which is best handled by a garage or the dealership.

    Okay yeah that probably would be the best thing to do. I don't run this truck very hard to of caused the transmission to do this. So my guess is it's somethin to do with the previous owner
