I just had the evaporator on my '97 Tacoma replaced. The mechanic added 3oz of oil and 20oz of 134a. I am concerned that the compressor runs constantly and does not cycle every 20-30 seconds as I recall it used to, though the temperature here hasn't dropped below 85 degrees yet. The temperature in the vents is 50-55 degrees when the ambient temperature is about 85 degrees. The sight glass never gets clear, just lots of bubbles. Is it working correctly now or was it working correctly before. Also, if the mechanic didn't evacuate the system well, what would I notice about its operation. Thanks.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Tacomas have a defrost linked AC control. The clutch will engage regardless of the AC being on if the vent is set to defrost. You can always test the clutch by disconnecting it and seeing if the cool air stops. If the cold air does not stop, then I'd say the clutch is stuck.

Forgot to mention: clutch disengages when AC switch is turned off as expected, and clutch was disengaged until initial 134a recharge brought pressure up - so the pressure switch near the Expansion Valve is working at low pressures.

    Hi OP,

I know this is an old thread and hope it can be revived. I have the same exact truck and issue you had. Did you ever get the problem fixed? Please post solutions if there was any. In desperate need to get this resolved!!

    Cheers!

If bubbles appear in the sight glass means
    1. leak in the system
    2. Moisture is in the system from number 1.
    3. Drier is saturated and needs to be replaced if system was opened or leak found
    4. Insufficient vacuum on the system after reassembly.

Take it to a reputable shop that specializes in Auto A/C work as they will have all the equipment to fix your A/C. You may want to go ahead and buy a new drier before you go.

The old evaporator core on my Tacoma cracked so I purchased a new one along with the AC Drier and Expansion Valve. After the new parts were replaced, I noticed that the compressor would run continuously when the AC is on. I also noticed that the system would lose cool air after 3-5 minutes of operation.
