Gas Pedal Whistle Issue

I just bought a 2001 4x4 Tacoma with 72k Miles on it. I notice that when I slightly press the gas pedal, there is some kind of high-pitched whistle coming from the truck.

It almost sounds like a dog whistle, and it is relatively soft. It only happens when I press the gas pedal slightly, and when I press harder (or softer) it goes away completely.

Anyone have this issue in the past? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

WTF? ive never heard of that. i have no idea what it could be since the pedal is cable drven. the only thing is maybe there is a small hole in one of your air hoses and you can only hear it when the engine is at low rpms

I assume it is the stock air intake, I have only had the truck for 3 days so I haven't gotten around to familiarizing myself with the internals yet (first time Taco owner)

Also @White Boy Taco

What is the best way to check for holes? I assume it will be pretty small so I was thinking I could just electrical tape everywhere, then remove it overtime to find the source area (if this is the problem).

Make sure you dont have a throttle body spacer installed. All they do is whistle.

well glad to add you to the Taco family! before you do anything, tacomaman06 has a good point. check if you have a throttle body spacer, if you dont know how to spot one, take a pic of your engine and we should be able to tell

although with a throttle spacer, i dont think if you can run stock intake without modification but im not too sure

The intake is flexible enough that a TB spacer should fit in no problem.

OP it'll probably be a big chunk of aluminum attached to the manifold of the throttle body. It'll also probably be like red or blue in color (the makers of these are firm believers in the color making it produce more power, and everyone knows bright colors are faster ). If you have one it's probably the cause of your whistling. It won't hurt anything to leave it there but if you can't stand the whistling take it off and use it as a paperweight or something.

Here are the photos, I didn't see anything unusual. I am relatively unfamiliar with the most of a car's engine though, planning to learn on this truck.

Just think of it as turbo/supercharger whine! My old explorer did that alot dunno why and never looked into it. Maybe a vacuum hose leak might be the source, I'm not certain though.

Does it happen in any gear and in neutral? Like if you're coasting fairly fast and just barely hit the pedal does it make the noise? Does it make the noise if you're in neutral or park?

I'll drive around the block and check if it does in neutral. I know it does in gears 1-5

Just finished, it didn't really whistle in neutral, it might have but it was substantially harder to hear. I went from 1500-2500 RPM in N. Maybe something to do with transmission? It only happens when I press the gas pedal VERY slightly.

this is pretty weird. i guess the only thing to do is to inspect all of the intake hoses

Where exactly are all of the intake hoses located?

Is the sound coming from the front of the truck or the back?

It sounds like it is coming from near the front, but it is hard to tell due to the pitch and volume being so high and low, respectively.

Just read you have a 5 speed... You sure it's not just the slight gear whine associated with a manual trans? I've noticed my truck is much less "refined" than other manual cars I've driven. The stick moves around like crazy and vibrates enough to satisfy the loosest of women. The whines and clicks of it changing gears are also very well pronounced, and I love it makes me feel much more "in tune" with the truck.
