01 tacoma dbl cab squeak noise coming from drive shaft area I think

01 tacoma dbl cab squeak noise coming from drive shaft I think. when driving I can hear a squeak noise but when I put it in netural no noise. I greased the u joints and the noise is the same. the faster I drive the faster the noise. When I pushed down on the rear bed and hear no noise. I'm guessing its the center drive shaft thing, how do I check it out?

could be your center support bearing, or your double cardan joint. For the center support bearing, it should have about a 1/4 of play in it when you move it around. As for the double cardan joint, mine did the same thing with the squeaking noise, and it ended up being bad. The bad news about that is that you can't replace it easily. I just ended up getting a one piece drive shaft from tom woods, and that solved the problem.

I'm taking a trip to Tenn from Massachusetts next month. Is this something I should be afraid of going bad on the trip? I think it was the center support bearing I had replaced years ago for around 250 dollars.

if it ends up being the center support bearing thats not as bad as the double cardan joint. I know when my double cardan joint went bad, one of the u joints actually cracked the yoke it sat in. Now have you tried greasing the center support bearing also, there should be a hole in the bottom of it the if you move a the rubber to the side a little you can see a grease fitting. Also have you greased the double cardan joint? There should be a grease fitting on the two u joints in it and one on the bearing that sits in between them.

i just used this grease http://quinbyhardware.com/Products/S...NZOIL-PRODUCTS

it's water proof, and it doesn't sling out. As for the center support bearing it should have a hole like this in the bottom of it like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Rear-Tim...-/140588204093

the grease fitting is in that hole.

Yep, I see the hole than another hole with a rubber plug in it. Is that the rubber that needs to be moved?

honestly i think it's probably your double cardan joint, because when you put it in neutral the noise stops, and when it's in neutral there is less strain on the drive shaft. If it was your center support bearing it would make the noise regardless of you being in neutral or not. Try greasing the two u joint in the double cardan and the bearing thats in between them. Alot of people miss that one because it's not that easy to see.

I put the truck in the air and turned the D shaft. From what I can tell the sound is coming from the rear U joint that connects to the rear axel.

I jacked it up today and gave it an now I'm wondering if the noise could be from the center of the drive shaft. I pumped it full of grease and it sounded like the noise was worse at first. I did lube the slip yoke where the two driveshafts come together. From what I read somethimes they will bind and cause noise?

Yesterday I replaced the rear U joint ( Toyota U joint $75.00!) and fixed the problem. One of the bearing caps was dry and eating into the surface.
