I bought a 2004 tacoma xtracab yesterday with 86000 miles on it. This truck has got to last me a long time. I am hearing some noises and just wanted to see if they are normal. When I am accelerating I can hear a slight rumble from the motor. Sounds to me like a very slight miss or exhaust leak. It may be just the engine noise but I just want to make sure that a slight rumble on acceleration is normal. Also somewhere from the front end (kinda sounds on the drivers side) I can hear a bit of a whining noise when I get to around 70 mph. It kind of sounds like something is winding up(when i release the throttle I can hear it wind down. Anyone know what this might be? I am going to take it in early next week and have all of the fluids gone through and replaced. Any other suggestions on things that I could have looked at for preventative maintenance.

Look at the sticky in the forum that says DIY mods or something like that. There you can learn fluids, brakes, grease, plugs etc.
Toyota parts get them from Camelback.
Use the search here and someone else has had the same noises guaranteed.

    Is it a 4 or a 6 cylinder?

noises are very hard to diagnose in person let alone over text. 86k on that engine is nothing, especially if it has been taken care of. You're going to get the fluids done so have your guy do a quick drive-ability check or drive someone elses tacoma and see if its in your head.

Being in Montana i could see a minor exhaust leak with the expansion and contraction due to the cold there.
