So my dad had never been wheeling before so I took him out in my truck about 5 minutes from their house in MD. I drove into what I thought was a mud puddle and it turned out it was more of a pond.

The view of the front of the truck from the drivers side window.

And the back of the truck.

I tried going forward and backing out and it just made it worse. My dad tried putting wood under my tires to give me some grip and it did nothing for me. Finally we decided there was no way we were getting out alone. Of course my phone died though so I couldn't call a friend to help. I have a winch but there was nothing to hook it up to. My dad actually started walking to see if someone was driving by and he could borrow their phone or help pull me out. After he left a guy drove down and was able to pull me out.

I saw there was oil leaking from my truck so I turned it off. When I couldn't see where it was leaking from I tried to turn it back on and it just clicked. The guy jumped me and it started. My dad came back with his Sequoia right after I got pulled out and I drove the few miles back home.

We took out a pressure washer and cleaned everything trying to find out what was wrong with it. I got it started with some great tips from threads on TW. I just beat on the starter with a hammer while my dad turned the key. I put some more oil in and drove it to the stealership to have them look at it the next morning.

It made it there ok but was leaking oil pretty good. They called me yesterday and said the shaft seal is leaking so it needs a new one and the serpentine belt pulley was grooved. They have to order the parts and it wont be done til Friday. He said it would be about $425. I need a new starter too but I'm going to put that in. From what I can tell it shouldn't be too hard and they wanted to charge me $550 just for the starter. F that.

Here's the truck sitting at the dealership.

I convinced them to give me a rental car and this is what I got.....

    Pretty sweet huh??

I guess I probably made it worse by trying so hard to get out. I should have just waited and had someone pull me out. Maybe then it would have been just muddy and not broken. A skid plate and a charged cell phone probably would have done me some good too.

Just thought I'd share some pictures from what was supposed to be a quick off roading trip down the road and turned out pretty crappy.

The dealership is ripping you off. They only gave you half a rental car. :D

Good luck I hope it all works out for you.

I think he said the main shaft seal? Does that sound right? I guess I was thinking more about the cost and didn't catch exactly what he said on the phone.

Thanks! Haha yeah, kind of an embarrassing car to drive around in but it was free at least...

Damm bud that sucks , hope the final repair bill isn't to bad .

One good way to get out of a jam with a winch if your solo would be to drive a nice bar a few feet down into the ground and try to pull off from that.

Yeah, you're getting screwed. You can change that one in about 30 minutes (an hour if it's your first time).

And you don't have a serpentine belt, but three separate belts rather.

Thanks thats a good idea. Maybe that's something I should throw in my tool box with a hammer before I go wheeling next time.

Damn...i should have done some more research before I took it there. I guess ill just let them do it this time. Since I need my truck asap. At least I saved some money telling them not to do the starter.
He probably didn't say serpentine belt I might have made that up. One if the pulleys is screwed up though.

Haha yea maybe dig the flukes into the ground. I probably could have just thrown an anchor in that mud and winched out from there. lol

This is a land anchor used for recovery when there aren't any trees or a tow vehicle around:

A boat anchor might work and would be better if you could slightly modify it. You want to make sure that as you pull, the 'shovel' part is trying to drive itself further into the ground rather than pulling up (notice the angles on the land anchor).

I'm not sure actually. Its run by the Army Corps of Engineers. I think its mainly for access to the canal and the powerlines and whatever else back there.

Going through a similar thing as you. I have leaking front and rear drive shafts, bad a/c clutch pulley bearing, no air bags or keyless entry, and a hard shifting auto trans when cold..... talk about a nightmare. I also had to change the starter.

I'm finding that trucks.... even toyotas.... are just not ATVs. they can't take much abuse.
