I went to change my oil yesterday I pulled the plug. Swapped the oil filter then added fresh oil. Then my truck started billowing out white smoke. So I checked the dip stick again and the oil was half way up the freaking stick. So I tried to drain oil out and barely any oil came out.... Any pointers before I go ripping apart the oil pan and look to see what's clogging it. I saw another guy with the same year truck post the same exact problem. Please help of you know anything. Truck is 4x4 V6 extra cab. My mechanic friend said it might be sludge, but this isn't the first time Ive changed the oil.

Are you sure you didn't drain the transmission. It's happened before.

    Check the tranny fluid level

Poke a small clean screw driver or an angled pick up in there carefully. See if anything is blocking the drain hole. I'd probably just drop the pan though.

Yea I did the screw driver thing. Mine is an 01 v6 4x4 and the oil plug is behind or beside the transfer case for the 4wd. Plus the fluid wa black tranny is red.

Trans drain plug is right next to the t+case. Engine oil is behind the radiator covered by the skidplate. Was the smoke blueish white? Thay usually means oil. Just white could mean water or coolant no?

If you uses a 24mm on the plug, that was the tcase drain. Your post above doesnt sound like u were in the right spot.

I'll go home and look behind the skid plate. So do I have to remove the plate to drain the oil?

No there is a convenient hole in the skid plate so it can be accessed and drained.

If you have 10 quarts of oil in there do NOT run it. Way too much pressure. Also its a metric made vehicle. All bolts are in MM. Using english tools can lead to stripped heads sooner or later. You can almost do anything on this truck with a 10mm 12mm 14mm. And 24mm wrench and 10mm hex head.

Yea do not run engine with extra oil, my friend worked at U-Haul and did maintenance and filled up a diesel with way too much oil. The dipstick was broken off so it looked liked it needed more. He starts it and it wont turn off smoke everywhere fire dept. comes whole nine yards L O L. I think diesels will keep running like that, either way its bad!!

The oil drain plug uses a 14mm socket or wrench

seen that before. long as a diesel has some sort of fuel it will run. all you do is cut the fuel to the motor is how it is shut down.

No offense but if your not sure which drain plug your using you shouldnt be changing the oil.. I'd be scared to do it myself if i didnt know what i was doing. And the oil drain plug should be a 14mm, like MonkeyProof said.

I got it thanks. I'm saving money by doing it myself. Everywhere else wants 50 plus just for an oil change. I'll do it myself for 25. This is my first Toyota so everything is new to me and a learning process. I've only owned Chevys and Hondas. I got it done though new oil and transmission fluid. Lol! Trucks running awesome. Thanks for all the help.
