well with tax money im going to have to drop some cash in my transmission because its gonna go out within the next 50k so I wants to have one on hand when it does grenade..... the specs of my truck is as follows:

    98, 4wd, 2.7L, sr5, automatic....

is there any website I would be able to find a good used one? I looked on ebay, cL, and everywhere I could including used auto parts places :(

another question.... What would it take to turn a 2.7L auto trans 4x2 into a 4x4...? or is it even possible?

I'm not sure what transmission is behind the 2.7, but my 3.4 is an A340. I converted it to a 4x4 a few years back. It was a plug and play swap. The only differences in the transmission were: A340E = 2wd; A340F = 4x4. The shaft on the 4x4 is just a little longer to accept a transfer case. The 4runner and tacomas both used these, but the speed sensor are a little difference. If you run into that I have all the info/part numbers in my build thread.

I have been looking at transmissions as well. Mine has around 200k on it and I am either going to have someone in town do it with the parts or buy the transmission from http://www.importperformancetrans.com/ They have upgraded valve bodies, torque converters, etc...

I guess my question is: What is happening to have you think it will be hand grenading soon? Have you looked into the option of rebuilding it instead of replacing it?

Obviously it is your truck, and your money, but I am not the type to risk buying a used transmission, not knowing what may already be going wrong with it. A remanufactured or reconditioned transmission (that usually comes with a decent warranty) is well worth the money IMHO.

Take it to a local independent transmission shop (not a franchise).

There is nothing wrong with a franchise, as long as the people that work there are reputable people. I have seen some good work come out of franchise shops just as much as I have sheen some crappy work from an independent.
