How can you tell if your engine may have already been chipped?

Yeah, Tacomas don't have "chips", per se. Nothing to chip. Engine already attempts to run at optimum power, using MAF, O2 sensors, and knock sensors for timing....

A chip has no work to do.

Unless the computer is different or has some sticker or you have the equipment to hookup to it and check then there is no way of telling as far as I know.

You can't send them off to be re-programmed or even attempt to do it yourself?

I remember reading somewhere about a recall and the Toyota dealership would re-program a first gen. ECU for shifting issues.

Only Toyota can do anything with the ECU's. There isnt anything that is out there that makes a big difference. Maybe a piggyback ECU?

Yea after reading this PDF I found about the recall it looks like they try to make it so it cannot be messed with, it says you cannot replace another ECU with another ECUs software (well yea ofcourse). I don't want to change mine...though it would be cool to see whats in there, I'm sure someone out there would want to hack it.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
You can get "chips" to "trick" the engine in adding more fuel for $50-$60 or spend a little more ($150-$400) on computers that "optimize" timing and fuel mapping for GARGANTUOUS AMOUNTS OF HP!

    Waste of money.
