The way you check yur fan clutch is an easy one, with motor off, grasp one of the fan blades & spin it, if theres a little yet smooth resistance, its fine, if you can't freely spin it or its frozen , its done...

Tie dental floss from the fan to the frame. If the floss breaks, after startup, the fan is fine... Along with the previous poster's comment: locked up constantly= bad clutch.
The noise is from the clutch being engaged upon startup. This is normal, as stated before. The clutch is locked until the silicone inside warms up, or reaches it's engage temp.

Interesting because I also notice the loud fan when I start when it is cold. Goes away after about 15 seconds. I figured it had to do with the clutch locking up the fan.

I had a 1988 22R with the same fan clutch and it did not do this. Maybe because it was so old.

    Too few to list.
Mine is noisy as well. I had the dealership look at it while I had it there and they said the fan clutch has a little "play" in it but I don't know what they are talking about as I checked it and it was fine, no play and just noisy.

My truck is making that same noise (I would have called it a squish squish when I depress the clutch only for the 1st time when it's cold); I haven't tried the floss test thing but if the fan is locked or too loose, is the fan the only thing that needs replaced?

The clutch is the part you replace, if the fan isn't falling apart.

when I first got my truck I was amazed to see (well, hear) how quiet the thing was. Come to find out the fan clutch was toast, and after installing a new one the loud fan sound was apparent.

    Just normal for these trucks.

My 1996 alsways made noise at startup and then you could hear it wind down after a short Time. New 2001 with a different engine is noisy 100% of the time. Normal?
