How big of an issue are they with these trucks? I've seen a number of users talking about their wheel falling off on the freeway etc. That really doesnt sound fun. What's the trouble point with them? Should they be replaced at an interval?

Sorry for the simple question, but these have been on my mind.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
There was a limited recal for a certain batch IIRC. I don't know of any replacement intervals but yes, keep a good eye on your ball joints as they do tend to fall off .

There was a BJ recall for, IIRC, 03-04 Tacos because the contractor and scratched up the BJ and Toyota recalled them for fear that something might happen to them.

I likely wont be able to afford newer than a '00. I was under the impression all 1st gen years were affected by this. Or is it just the late facelifted ones?

Just the later years, I would say 01-04.

Leveling kit, all the plastic, UWS tool box! Don't plan to lift want it to be able to drive daily and work the woods as well!!
87 4runner?? Do u hear them squeak when turning in parking lots or anything? They aint to bad but if they have never been changed then the might need a little heat to get the out! Use a puller (pitman arm puller) should be able to rent at autozone!

Not my ball joints, my 4runner is generally doing fine. I had just seen several members talk about "the time their Tacoma's wheel fell off on the freeway" and I wanted to inquire further about this potential trouble spot.

On this subject, a block from my house just now it looks like someone's ball joint failed. Single cab tacoma, might have been 2wd, front suspension was collapsed with one wheel sitting at about a 45 degree slant.

I should have snapped a pic

Check them. If they're bad, replace them. Simple as that.

I have an '02. My VIN came up as under the ball-joint recall.

I should really bring it in at some point for that...
