Best way to black out my 03 stock rims?

Just recently bought my truck. Wanting to black out the stock rims. I have painted rims before on an 01 vw GTI but I was just wondering if anyone has any hints or tips for me such as certain types of primer, black paint, and clear coats they used, and how many of each is best? Also what kinds of sand paper to use? I want the rims to shine opposed to being flat black. NO I don't want to use bed or frame liner.

 

i would scuff em um, wipe em down with laquer thinner or some other solvent and shoot em rustoleum gloss black. i did mine just like that but flat and its held up really well

 

i've heard of people using plastiderp. easy prep: clean and dry thoroughly, then paint. supposed to hold up pretty well. i haven't done it personally, but i've heard it's been done.

think that's what i'm going to try! If I had an all black truck I'd do flat black but mine's silver as you can see so want everything to shine. thanks for the input!

 

I just did mine the other day! took a long time but I wanted to do it right so they would last. here's what helped me:

1. TAKE YOUR TIME. attention to detail will make you a happy man later.
2. prep is key. if you sand and prime correctly, you'll save yourself headache
3. use index cards around edge of rims for easier painting. no tape required. mucho bueno
4. use Rustoleum Wheel Paint. comes in a red can. it's got a special mixture of paint that comes out looking really clean and professional. no clear coat required. mucho mucho bueno.

 

i have a question. how do you clean plasti derped wheels

i just throw soap suds at them and rinse em off but am not sure how to dry them. they seem to attract minute amounts of microfibers ... hmmm

 

Index cards that's a good idea! I used tape and newspaper before...what grit of sand paper did you used? and did you do the inside of the rim too? is that your red truck? did you paint the grill it looks like it. Looks good!
