Hey all, I just recently bought my first Toyota, it's a 1995 Tacoma 2.7I 4x4 roller and I had the entire motor professionally rebuilt. Since then it's been installed and I've been driving it and it does well most of the time. On the other hand it randomly misfires and bogs down pretty bad. It never seems to happen consistently or around the same rpm. Here's a few things I think have something to do with it.

    1) I can't connect with obd2 to pull the codes
    2) When I first drive it runs decent but after 10 mins or longer when I shut it off and start it to leave again it won't go over 2100rpms. Like it's in limp mode.
    3) My fuel pump never stops priming when I cycle the key. I've check FP and it's 44lbs.

Im at my wIts end Any help with this is greatly appreciated! I'm new to Toyotas so I'm sorry if I left out any vital info.

Not being able to pull codes could mean two things:
    1. The computer has an internal problem
    2. The communication wires between the computer and the OBD2 connector have a problem (broken, shorted, etc)

As for the hot-restart issue, that could be an interesting one, but would be too hard to speculate since you can't pull codes or get data.

On to the fuel pump. when you say it never stops priming do you mean when you turn the key on, the pump runs continuously, even without the engine running?

Yes it primes all the time even when the motor is off.

Is finding TDC on #1 piston the only way to set and or check timing?

Also I want to update the random misfire and bogging down. So a long story short was poking my hand around the intake while the truck was running and got the shit zapped out of me. #3 spark plug boot doesn't seem to seating properly. It clicks down but only in the right position does it run like a top.

So now my biggest issue is the hot restart. If I shut my truck off and cycle the key a few times it takes it out of limp mode and drive as it should

Check all your fuses. That's why no communication. There is no limp mode on 95 2.7. Maybe plugged catalytic converter or air fuel sensor.

Sorry, have been gone for a little bit. Joe, Yes, you are right, he is an OBD1 system. Though a broken wire could still be the culprit in no communication. The pre-OBD2 systems have a totally different connector, so you couldn't connect an OBD2 scan tool into the truck at all. I was not thinking his was a '95.
