By the way, the old adage of never volunteer? Throw it out the window. these days you increase your chances of promotion, and career advancement by volunteering. I volunteered for everything I could, and by the end of my 8 years, Every officer treated me with respect and the 1st Sgt and I would always go out for beers. I had a lot of responsibility and oversaw a lot of subordinates. Some of them even outranked me, but they still treated me with respect because they knew I knew what I was doing, and that I didn't play games. I saw too many boots get hurt because they got cocky and didn't take the time to actually LEARN what they were supposed to be doing.
