So I bought another Tacoma the other day (3rd so far) and its a 2000 3.4l v6 5 speed and has 6" lift and 35x12.50s on it. It has pretty good power surprisingly, I think part of it is the low miles (65000). I am interested in regearing to a 4:56 or 4:88 but I don't want to lose mpg but do want more power. Any opinions?? I'm not very familiar with gearing.

Go 4:88s, bud! I have the same truck (00 Taco 3.4L w/ 6" suspention and 3" body running 35x12.50R15 BFGs) and it runs like a champ now! The 4:56s wouldn't be enough for the 35's especially if you do anything off the paved road! Going with the 4:88s was def my best and favorite mod since it brought back the V6 power! :p Hope this helps!

i would go with 4.88, i have an 03 with 33X1250X15 and i got 4.88s and the were to low, went to 4.56s after the 4.88 diff blew up. 4.88s would be perfect for 35s

Alright guys thanks!!! That's exactly what I needed. Now, how expensive are they and can I put them in myself? If not, what's the total price of getting them and having them installed?

Gears are not for the average DIY. If they are not set-up properly you will destroy them. It's best left with a professional. I reccomend uninstalling them to the part where they are actually just a unit and bring them in. It will save you hundreds. Otherwise you are probably looking at over $600 for install, or over $1k as I've read from people.

Go 4.88's. I have 4.56's and run 265/75's and 33x10.50's and almost wish I would have done 4.88's. Also, if you have some mechanical ability, remove the front diff and rear third member yourself and then take them to a shop to get the gears installed. You will save some coin doing it this way and also gain the experience of removing your differentials which could prove to be valuable down the road.

Go ahead and do the 4.88's, I regret doing 4.56's. They were almost perfect when I had my 33x12.50 Duratracs, but that tire is small to begin with (32.5 or .6) Now that I'm running the MTR's (heavier/taller) I can feel them pretty bad. I am going to end up going to 4.88's before it's all said and done.

If you want to see how 4.88s would effect your highway mpg just drive in 4th and see if your mpg tanks.

But are you sure what your gears are now?

His gears are prolly the 4:10s since he's still able to get some power and roll down the road! But the re-gear will actually help with mpg's when doing city driving just due to the fact that he wont be having to romp on the gas and stay on the gas just to get started down the road!

I got my gears (ring and pinion) and both (front and rear) master install kits from Randy's Ring and Pinion using all Yukon parts! Hope this helps:

Alright thanks.. I'm definitely going with the 4:88. I have the 4:10 now and want my power back since I'm running 35s. Thanks for the info. I found a guy to install whatever I get for about 200. Not bad. So where is the best place to buy?
