I bought a fuel additive that is supposed to help clean out the tank and engine. Before i used it I was going to check and see what other people thought about these additives. Should I use it or not ?

    Thanks for the help.

I use Marvel mystery oil in my tank once in a while. I can't say if it really does anything though. However, I have a low mileage truck so I'm not trying to clean anything really.

I use Lucas products in everything from my truck to sportbike, to weed eater and lawn mower. I can't speak for other brands, but the Lucas fuel additives work almost instantly. I can take for instance my Yamaha R1 (sportbike for those not familiar) and start it after it's been sitting all winter and it will run rough from the gunk and fuel clogging the injectors. I put in some of the Lucas additive afterwards, and the bike comes to life roaring within minutes. It works 100% and is good maintenance overall.

If you use E10 in your truck be careful of the additives you use, a lot are alcohol based. I use Star Tron which is safe to use with E10.

I use Startron in all of my small engines (sport bike, lawn mower, snow blower, etc) and it really helps keep them running well. The ethanol was playing hell on the small engines and making them impossible to start. Startron keep the ethanol from separating over time. It also takes a very small dose to do the trick so it's inexpensive to use plus, there's absolutely 0 harm in overdosing.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
I use Seafoam to clean and a stabilizer if I plan on having the fuel in the tank for more than a week.

OK, you guys got me thinking, but not about my Tacoma.

I have a '77 Celica I am slowly restoring with a carbureted 20R motor. It's not finished or in a state to drive other than up and down the street when neighbors aren't looking, but I do start it up and run it at least once a month. It's a brand new rebuilt motor, MSD electronic ignition and Weber 32/26 carb with no emissions equipment and started up the first time.

Several months ago it got to where it wouldn't idle. It still starts and runs, but won't idle. It almost does, but stumbles a lot. I was thinking intake leak and have been trying to find it using the brake cleaner/carb cleaner spray trick, but can't find anything definitive. A mechanic buddy said that with today's 10% ethanol fuels, the fuel gets unstable quickly. I have just been adding additional fuel to the tank from the mower gas can off and on over the last couple of years, so it just dawned on me that it could be an idle jet! Duh.

So my question: Which of these fuel additives would do the best job of clearing out the idle jets and stabilizing the fuel? Or do I need to drain the tank and start over?

I'd rather start with a cheap bottle of additive and see if that works. It doesn't make much sense that an intake leak would happen all of the sudden on such a simple system, although I do like the looks of the LCE intake for the 20R so I could get rid of the Weber adapter.

I do the Lucas fuel additive every time I do a oil change but I don't think it does anything.

This^^............ I use it every oil change. Although others have stated it doesn't do anything for them, I do notice a +0.5mpg gain on the first fuel up after using it, but usually nothing after that.

I've gotten ABSOLUTE DOG SHIT fuel economy using this.

    I've tested in both a 2000 Tacoma (3.4l V6) and 2007 Impreza (2.5I boxer 4)

Both vehicles, on 3 separate occasions have gotten worse gas mileage. The subaru averages 400miles per tank, my Taco gets 300.

The subaru ended out at 340miles, my taco ended at 250miles.

Not sure why, but the fuel economy dropped, with no change in driving habits. Once we refueled, the fuel economy went back up.

Seafoam on the other hand hasnt had adverse effects, so im sticking with it.

Gas in the gas tank, oil in the crankcase, coolant in the radiator.
Anything else is snake oil and only empties your pocket.

Think about it... that little 8oz bottle "treats up to 22 gallons"
    ????
That bottle is going to be adequate to treat 20 gallons, but it's not going to be too much for a 10 gallon Corolla, or a 4 gallon motorcycle?
