I got my ball joints replaced for free by toyota because of a recall. You might want to look into that.

My biggest problem is its all off my truck so I can't drive it anywhere, and the 2 mechanics I talked to both said they can't do it with the arm off the truck

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You just remove the snap ring and press it out of the knuckle.

    See bottom of page...

There is a link, somewhere on here, where you enter your vin number and it tells you if there have been any recalls.

It is the lowers that toyota was replacing. OP is asking about uppers.

The upper ball joint is a press in fit and can be a challange to do on the truck. Some have been able to press them out with a ball joint removal tool but I was not ablle to. I removed my spindles and had a shop press them out and press in the new uniballs.

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
well with a 4.7 in the truck the recall was a moot point,
with the extra weight of a v8 you need to look into heavy duty ball-joints.

That's why I'm doing a SAS, a stock suspension can't hold that weight.
