I am new to the truck/tacoma world and could use some help. I come from the Mustang community and have always had a slew of parts availabe at a fingertips reach. For this truck however, it doesnt seem to be the case.
One of the BIGGEST bang for the buck mods i ever did in my Mustang was go from 3.27 gears to 3.73s. It was like bolting on forced induction! Well ive been spoiled to be in and use my fathers '05 Prerunner in the past and that thing seems like it would keep up with my Mustang. So i have been pretty disapointed with the performance of mine. Thus the want for a steeper gear ratio.

I did find a couple of choices, 4.56 and 4.88 seem to be the most popular. Also, i dont plan on putting bigger tires on it. If i do, ill just go up a size to 265/75's but no higher. My porblem is, ive looed on Hypertech, SCT, Diablo, etc and cant seem to find any hand held tuners for this truck to recalibrate the speedometer. So i guess my two biggest questions are these...

What gear ratio would be best? (mainly daily driven to and from work. 45mph speed limits, and 12.3 mile round trip)

WHo or what is used to recal the speedo? (i dont want to be reading 45 and really be doing 60 and get tickets)

Andy and all help would be great. Thanks guys!

    It's a truck, not a Mustang :notsure:

If you're not planning on putting bigger tires on and wheeling it, then I think going with 4.56s might be a little much and 4.88 would be ridiculous. Just my opinion of course.

You're talking about a sports car vs a truck... Big difference. The E46 BMW M3 benefits 4.10's better than the 3.73's stock...

I believe your truck has the stock 4.10. If anything with those tires the best would only be 4.56... Otherwise you will be in such high RPM you will just burn fuel.

If you do a lot of city driving a gear change wouldn't be bad but highway speeds you will lose all economy. Either way, the Tacoma is a brick and thinking it will go fast is just a let down in the end.

My Prerunner has 4.10, works out good for me so far, hauling loads and not :) Think I'm running 265/70/16.

Yeah I hear you. But I guess there must be something wrong then. This truck is a gutless pig. I just had a complete tune up done. Belts hoses plugs fluid. Only thing I have t done yet is rear diff oil change. Ok we'll my plans for the truck are ICON Stage 1 kit and 265/75s. Will I need regearing for a 1" increase in tire size? If so then what, 4.56? And who sells the matching speedo gears? Please bear with me everything for the stang was tunability. Change gears and plug in a tuner and recalibrate

You ar correct in gearing being a good way to increase performance. If you go with taller and heavier tires it will feel like you just lost 25 HP. If you are running 4.10 ratio rear axle now then you might want to make sure nothing else is wrong. My last truck was a Chevy 2WD, 5.3L V8 with a 3.54 rear gears, I put on taller tires and tried pulling a RV trailer and it was gutless. I swapped to 4.10 rear gears and it was much better pulling and towing and unloaded performance was just plain snappy! Fuel mileage was still pretty good too. Find out what rear ratio you currently have to start with.

Ok s I went with the heavy 10 ply bfg at 265/75 and could really use a gear change. Any recommendations?
