I was on my way to my stand yesterday morning when out of nowhere came a rut crazed buck from the right side of the road. I was going the posted speed limit of 55 and had no time to react when I struck the deer. I was impressed with how well the ARB protected the front end from severe damage but I was also amazed how much the bumper flexed. I can honestly say I am pleased with the ARB and thankful I have it simply because if I did not have it I would be looking at a lot more damage. The damage received is bent bumper and mounts, broken grille and bent passenger side fender. I'm good to go. I appreciate the thought. I'm more irritated that I will be without my truck for a week or so during the rut.

Interesting. So the bumper pushed in a couple of inches? Did you have the two bolts on each side that lock it in place? The ones that require drilling

They are installed. I'm just happy the bumper did what it was built for. I thought it would hold up better than it did but I will accept it because it could have been much worse without it.

The deer's head was laying backwards on it's body at final rest. As I pulled it out of the road it seemed as if the body was jello.

I left it on the side of the road as I knew there wouldn't be much if any good meat.

I agree. I would've thought that it would have held up a little better than that, but still...that's impressive though for 55mph.

The problem with those bumpers is they are too close to the body, which is a good thing for offroading approach angles and such, but not for impact. If there was a little compression factor built into the bumper brackets it would hold up better but new brackets would probably be in order after a hard impact. At least this is how I would design my bumper.

The mounting brackets for the ARB are designed with a crumple zone and are designed so that in ahead on collision the bumper and brackets will compress in the same rate as the OEM bumper. Sure there is damage to the vehicle but the ARB did it's job. The deer was deflected from the cab of the truck and overall damage to the truck was minimal. Had the deer been hit without the ARB there would have been significant damage and the truck would probably not have been drivable after the impact.

I've been to ARB's U.S. facility in Renton and talked with a few of the engineers in the past. They say that the bar's are designed foremost for passenger safety and the bar's are designed to deflect large animal impacts either up and away or down and away from the underside of the vehicle.

I was impressed with the performance of the ARB and it did deflect the deer under the truck although my Budbuilt skid kept pushing the carcass out in front of the truck as I was slowing down until it slid into the the other lane as I turned to the shoulder of the road. I will definitely get another one.

This conversation is making me want one (although I already do)! I don't see deer too often, but I do see them on back roads at least once a year. Usually see them in South Texas more often than I do in North Texas, but they are still a presence no matter where I am.

Last year, my wife and I were heading down Hwy 81 below I-10. I saw a buck on the side of the road as he looked towards us. Right before we got to him, he jumped into the road. Luckily there were no other cars on the road, and i was able to swerve to avoid making contact. I do go hunting at least once a year, and the property that we go to is smack in the middle of the white spot on the Verizon map. Amazingly, our phones do tend to work, but it is very spotty and unreliable at best.

I wonder how the TJM bumpers would hold up by comparison?
