I've found a couple of 1st gen Tacoma's and I'm wondering your opinions.

First one is a 2001 double cab, automatic, 4x4 SR5 and TRD package with 121,xxx miles on it. Dealer asking price is $12,995

Second is a 2002 double cab, automatic, 4x4 SR5 with 127,xxx miles on it. Dealer asking price is $12,795.

Both are at same dealer. Would you be thinking bout buying either of these and how much would you offer? I do have a trade in that I would be trading on either of these. What are your thoughts? Too many miles, too high on price?

Trd package for sure. The miles are fine on either.

Seems like good prices and miles are pretty low. I say go Trd too.

i personally wouldn't buy either as the question asks mainly because they are automatic, but for you both of those sound great, i would definitely go trd.

I got my 2005 with 90,000 miles for 12,900 but its not trd so im not so sure about those prices

    They don't.

To the OP, it seems like a DC 4x4 is what you're after. If so, the TRD one isn't that bad of a deal.

Assuming it's in good shape, etc...

    I'd grab the '01 over the '02...

    for two reasons:

    1. TRD = rear locker (factory TRD)

    2. The '01 excludes the TBW (throttle by wire)

    ^ '02 - '04 has the TBW crap

TBW? throttle by wire. Is that the wire or cable that you can rev up the engine from under the hood. Sorry if I should know this but don't. Could someone explain more on this.

    Too few to list.
I believe it's 03-04 that have the TBW. The butterfly is controlled by electronics and not mechanical. Some develop problems later on and seems to be the only fix is to replace the whole throttle body since Toyota does not sell it in pieces and from what I've read the price runs about$1200.

I'd take the 01 TRD as mileage is the same plus you get the e-locker. I'm pretty sure you can still negotiate for a better price.

I like the 2001 TRD pricing in really fair,in PA both units would prolly be $1000-$1500 higher.

I haven't looked at the Throttle body too closely on this one, since I've only had it less than a week, but I didn't think mine(03) had an electronic throttle.

If it does, I'm going to be disappointed. I hadn't heard about that...

As for OP, I'd go with the TRD one. The miles add up better and it looks nicer.

Would you try to negotiate with the dealer? How much would you offer them to start with? Thanks for the help so far.

I would say the TRD one but before you even make a purchase, blue book it and check with your bank if you are going to pull out a loan on it, Make sure they tell you if it is worth it, my mom did that with her bank because she works there and they have a database of prices to make sure it is worth it to you and them to pull out a loan on it.

Doesn't matter what kbb, nada or edmunds says they aren't buying them. The sale of 1st gens are white hot, while your negating with the dealer based on kbb, nada etc someone will walk up and plunk the money down!
