Tundra brake upgrade?? Just a few questions.

Ok I have read and reread a lot of threads on this upgrade and think I am about to pull the trigger on it. Now I do still have a few questions though that I hope I can get answered from so of you guys who have done this or know more about it than me.

1: I know that the S13WE calipers will work from a 2000 V8 Tundra I am wondering what I will need to do other that cut my dust shield a bit to fit the bigger calipers from the 2005? I would like to do that bigger ones but am not opposed to going with the S13WE calipers.

2: Also if I go with the Wheelers brake lines there is no drilling correct?


3: If I go to NAPA all I have to do is say hey I want a set of rotors, calipers, and pads for a 2000 Tundra? Or from a 2005 if I can fit the bigger calipers.

4: What are the advantages of the bigger calipers?

Sorry for some of the obvious questions just want to do it right the first time. Thanks for any help guys.

just did the swap last week. loving it so far!

i was able to fit the larger 231mm (13WL) calipers behind the stock 16" 01-04 alloys with millimeters to spare. go big or go home, right? if you ask for 05-06 tundra calipers/rotors, you'll be getting the larger version.

definitely order the wheelers brake lines. i tried the drilling method originally, but could not get the passenger side to seal up. ordered the wheeler's lines and had no problems (really it's the banjo bolts that come with the wheeler's lines that you need, but the lines are nice too).

and the dust shield modification is a piece of cake. i used a dremel and a pair of tin snips. took no more than about 10 mins/side... taking my time.

Awesome tomorrow I will go to NAPA and get a set of rotors, calipers, and pads for an 05 V8 Tundra and get to work. I need new lines anyways so it will be worth it. No issues with your master cylinder?

nope, no issues with the M/C...

people have reported though that as the tundra pads wear down, the stock Tacoma M/C will run lower than the "low" line due to the increased tundra pad thickness. just keep the M/C topped off and then siphon out the excess when you change the pads in the future

oh, one thing to check on the calipers before you buy them: make sure the port where you attach the brake line is machined smooth. from the factory, tundra calipers have a hardline fitting, not a banjo bolt fitting like the tacomas, so they don't require a machined surface to make the seal. i had to file one of my calipers smooth because it had a rough "cast" surface there.

Yea I can check the fluid every so often to make sure it isn't low. I thoght that if you had the wheelers lines that it was ok if the calipers didn't have the banjo fitting? Either way I am sure that NAPA will know what ones I want if I tell them that I want the smooth port.

Actually it is not the extra thickness of the pads of the Tundra that causes low fluid, (From what my research has shown) it is the fact that the pistons are larger, and it takes more fluid to fill the caliper as the pad wears.

I had an interesting issue where the retaining bolts for the calipers were too long (the section with the bolt holes on the calipers were marginally thinner than on the Tacoma calipers).

I had to get a thick washer to fill the gap. I torqued it nice and tight and so far they are holding up nicely, but am a bit skittish right now.

As far as weather to do it; with stock tires, dont waste your money (unless you tow/haul frequently). Stock brakes are just fine.

If you get bigger tires, I def noticed the brakes were working harder when I got my 285/27 r16's. The Tundra brakes fixed this just fine but I didnt find them all THAT much of a difference.

On another note, got my calipers off ebay junk yard. Ask to see a pic of the actuall product, first though.

As of now I have 285/75/16's as well and my stock brakes are done. The rotors my still be good but everything else is done. The reason I am considering doing this is becase I will be adding plate armor soon and didn't want to worry about how my stopping power was going to be with all the added weight. Also this is not a DD it is now just a toy.

that could be it too. all i know (and what seems to make sense in my head) is that as the tundra pads wear down it takes more fluid than the Tacoma M/C was originally designed for so the "low" line on the Tacoma doesn't correspond to worn out brake pads anymore.
